Heading Into The Body Shop

Im taking my '72 into the shop this week to get a full paint color change and get the body work done and cleaned up. Im excited to finally get this project done after 10 years. Does anyone have any suggestions of things to get taken care of or to do while I have it there aside from the obvious? Im hoping to learn something I havent thought about. Thanks

 

I’m looking forward to doing this someday. I envision taking a tub, fenders, a tailgate and hood in to get painted. I can’t imagine painting one all in one piece.

Other than the hidden rust and cracks that will show up I can’t think of anything to add really. Show us how it comes out!

 

No advice here. Just wondering what color you are going with?

 

Skyway Blue...we live by the beach so Im thinking the color will really stand out!

I've been pondering this a lot and think I'm going to prime everything and then dip the jeep where it isn't raptor lined. It's completely DIY'able, totally custom, looks great, it's way cheaper, and you can peel the color up by section if you scratch it on the trail. Or just peel the whole thing if you get tired of the color.

Edit: Obviously I'll paint anything that sees heavier duty (engine, trim, etc.) but for the tub and hood areas I think this could be a game changer!

 

Assuming you're speaking to me....maybe. I've got access to a compressor large enough for the job but I'd have to trailer the tub to it. The gun seems reasonably priced and the finished product seems legit. Why do you ask?

My boy went crazy with plasti-dip on his car, I figured it was OK since you can just peel it off later... well if it stays on for a while, the peeling doesn't work anymore. It comes off in tiny pieces. It seems to lose its elasticity which may be fine if you don't plan on taking it off. It's not super resistant to scrapes and gouges like bedliner. It's kind of a weird product. I like it on tool handles though.

 

It seems to be important to lay it on in several coats, and obviously prep the surface well. In addition, they recommend you use their maintenance spray pretty often, probably for that reason. No more often than one would wash a car though. I concede it's not as tough as bed liner, nor should it be. I think the ability to quickly fix a scratch negates that well enough. I have been finding uses for it on smaller scales as well. Give me a second and I'll upload a picture of the gas tanks I just did.
