Did ecj5s come with a cigarette lighter or was there an option for one? If so, where was it mounted on the dash and what did it look like.
Guessing mine isn't original...but I got it working today! I don't smoke or have any intention to use it, but if its going to be in the dash, then it should function. Plus, I can use it as a 12V source for a USB or phone charger. Might get my jeep into the 21st century one of these days.

here is a pic - its above and between the key ignition switch and the speedo.

My '71 has one in same spot. I thought it was an option by the late '60s

Thanks guys - I wouldn't have bet a penny that it could be OEM. Good to know and glad I got it working and didn't trash it.

Should come with an ashtray under the dash, I think. That was the package in the 70s.

I'm pretty sure it was a dealer option, right? The wiring on mine matches the rest of the harness (same molded bullet connectors). Mine is not in the same place as yours, which makes sense if it was up to the dealers to install. I saw a NOS kit on ebay a while back, sealed in a plastic bag with the Kaiser Jeep logo.

I believe it could be delivered with the car (an item on the window sticker) or dealer installed. It's really simple to install - if not present from the factory, there is a plug in the dash. Pop out the plug, screw in the lighter, plug in to the connector already in the harness. Holes for the ash tray are already in the bottom edge of the dash. I know it was this way by 1972, and I expect it ewas the same earlier on.

My 71 RII came with one and I have never seen where it was a RII item so I am thinking it was standard in 71's. And you could tell the wiring for it was not something just added, but part of the factory wiring. And the lighter had the Jeep logo. But the wiring diagram in the 71 FSM does not show it.

My '57 has a lighter in the dash. 6V and it works. Looks to be factory original, but does anyone know if that was an option back then?

I don’t have a lighter in my ‘61 but it had an ash tray. I found it my mom’s garage last weekend. It was still full of loose change. Removed it 20 years ago when I redid the jeep. Plan is to clean it up and reinstall.

Thank you for posting this!! I have no ash tray, yet, you saved me a lot of time figuring out why my horn button on the dash gets stuck when pressed and does not sound the horn! It also requires that I purchase a new steering wheel center button that is hard and won't sound the horn.:watch:

Can you post a picture. Have you used it to run a charger?

I havent run a charger yet, but it should work. An iPhone charger is just a step down tranformer to 5V. The lighter is just below the left end of the grab bar.
