Bone Stock

Since getting my Jeep I have been looking at a lot of pictures and day dreaming about how I will build mine to suite me. I think the red Jeep at the top of the page got me thinking along the lines of a stock minimal look and I am wondering how many people here have gone this route. For sure it would be a fair weather driver and the lack of a roll bar would limit the terrain that I could tackle but still this idea tempts me.

 

I believe that a lot more of these early jeeps should to be preserved for future generations to see what a stock jeep looks like.
I have no problem driving mine around without all the improvements that are so often done.

 

I keep my '57 totally stock, and I love it that way, faded paint and all.
Costs me almost nothing to maintain, and every year it becomes more special, as an OEM 'survivor.'

The only caveat might be that it's only used locally in a rural setting, and generally in fair weather.

The way I use it I prefer not having a roll bar, although I understand those who want one.

I have also restored a 59 cj-5 ,I like it and enjoy driving it..that said I am rebuilding one now that will have saginaw steering,11"brakes and other changes as it goes on,its for snowplowing and I wanted to do just try to do it...and it wasn't a surviver,it's a combination of many vehicles.

 

I'm planning on keeping my 58 mostly stock. I did add roll bar and seat belts for the safety aspect, put all terrain tires on since the NDT's I found were very scary on asphalt if there was any moisture on the road and in braking situations. The only other planned change is doing the Geo disc brake conversion which allows me to keep the factory KH 16x4.5 rims. I may add a dual brake master at some point, again for safety.

 

I agree with this. If you want to keep it stock, at least go with a rollbar, (I know some will disagree with that) and seatbelts and a dual master cylinder if not so equipped.

 

I'm at a crossroad with it now, there's enough of the original Jeep to bring it back with some work or go the resto mod route. If I do go stock I'll still upgrade the master cylinder little things that are hidden like that don't bother me. Either way it will not be a 100 pt show piece. Here's what I'm starting with:

 

While my current '68 build is going to have some tasteful mods, I do have a fairly nice and original '69 waiting in the wings. That one I was planning to do like this...

 

I'll be keeping mine "mostly stock" too. Some subtle upgrades/mods.

 

I like the look of stock cj5 with some taller tires on it. Or just a slight lift and the taller boots. Kind of depends what it's going to be used for. I like lifted ones too. In fact, there aren't many I don't like.

 

My 58, is stock only things I've added are options from the time, and seat belts. Still 6 volt. Rusty faded paint drive it 3 to 4 times a week rain or shine. My thinking is my jeep made it 60 years without "mods" who am I to mess with it.

not even a seat cover? looking pretty much like your seat is kaput

but I like the look of the rest of it. heck, some people pay big money for that patina paint job.

 

Yep the seats could use some work lol, I'm going to get them redone one of these days. Slowly I've been fixing and rebuilding parts or areas.

 

Karl, It looks like you have a solid foundation to start with, no matter which direction you go. A '67 could have had either an F-134 or Dauntless 225. The frame mounts (if still present) will tell which. Are you going to keep the 283?
My opinion, its hard to go wrong bringing a Jeep back to close to original stock condition. Depending on the intended use, I might even forgo a rollbar.
I'm still gathering parts to bring my old CJ5a back as close to original as I can. I'm the one that made all the modifications to it 39 years ago.

The 283 is such a nice running motor and right now it runs on propane but I'm going to switch it back to gasoline so I can get rid of the scoop on the hood and the big tank behind the seats. It originally came with a V6, I think if I can find a good one I'll go back to that and sell the 283 to cover some of the cost. Years ago I had a 61 GMC and really liked the V6 in that truck. Seems like a 225 V6 would be a perfect motor for a CJ-5

I really like the period look of no roll bar and no top but I'll have to give it some more thought plus see how it handles once it lowered back to stock height.
