    Fellas,

Just wondering what kind of oil I can use for transmission/transfer case and differentials. I've read that GL-5 type oil in the tranny can be hard on the brass parts but it's all I can find in the parts stores. My manual for this 1970 CJ-5 calls for GL-4 in the tranny and transfer case. Also, the diff's call for MIL-L-2105B. Does anyone know where to find these oils or know of viable substitutes?

    Thanks in advance

I buy Sta-lube GL-4 on Amazon. No big deal. Don't use GL-5 even when the parts guy tells you it is "the same."

Search the archives here - they include many discussions on the topic. Tractor web forums, too.

You can use the GL-5 in the axles. No problem. I suggest GL-4 for the transmission/transfer case.

I use whatever generic brand of 90-weight gear oil is in the 55 gallon drum in the barn, Pennzoil I think........ In the TCs, axles, and manual gearboxes of everything that has them, regardless of the season.

    Seems to work fine. :p
