    To all,

I did a search on roll bars in this thread and really couldn't come up with an answer to my question. Will a factory stock 1976 CJ 5 roll bar work/fit in a 1966 CJ 5 ? This is the rear mounted design, not the later full cage style.

There is 76 roll bar for sale about five hours from me in SW Oregon and I wanted in inquire before I spent the fuel in driving down to pick it up in CA.

Thanks in advance and Happy Father's Day to all,

    Frank

short answer no . but if you cut off bottom of 76 bar . and weld 2" angle iron to it . that would work . early bars only mount to top of rear fender wells

but if it looks like this . this will work

If it is a 1976 bar you should be good. Sometime around 1979-1980 they changed the rollbar so that the main hoop mounted to the floor behind the front seats - this style bar would need to be modified as Ron suggests. I had the 1976-79 style in my 55 cj5.

Ten hours round trip? I wouldn't drive that far for a whole jeep. But that's me.:)

    It had better fit!

Have you checked the cost of getting one made locally?

    Pete L and Focker,

Thank you for your advice and the CL ad up in Idaho.
I think I will put a ad on the local CL and see if there are any around this neck of the woods.
    Have a great upcoming week,

    Frank

I know the Idaho drive wouldn't be much better, but I just wanted to point out how cheap they can be found.

The rollbar on my 66 Tux was made by a company in Grants Pass but that was back in the late 60's. The company's name was Walt's (something or other) can't remember the last name.

    Focker and Walt,

Thanks for the information. I posted an add on the CL for a roll bar. Will see what happens and go from there. Walt, I am not familiar with that company, but in the 60's, I had other things that were occupying my time. I will asked around if any of the locals would know about it.

Didn't the 76 rollbars angle back to match the angled windshield that started that year?
That would look odd in an early CJ...

I don't believe any CJ ever came with a factory front bar.

No it was the first names like maybe brothers. There sticker was still on the rollbar until I repainted it about 6 years ago.

I meant the main hoop of the roll bar, like this one...

    To all,

I put an ad in the auto parts section on the Medford CL for the roll bar.
Will see if there is any response.
    Thanks,
    Frank
