I got a valve spring compressor today and started to take out valves and inspect everything. Fortunately the valves look to be in good shape. No rust what so ever. The shaft that rides in the valve guide is very nice, shiny and smooth. After i clean it all up and run a pipe cleaner down the guides, do i add any lube or grease to the valve to lube it up nice ? And a dumb question, how does the valve shafts get lubricated when the engine is running?

    They just do, okay?

Valve guide clearance is important, and lubrication would be one reason.

As mentioned above...........The guides need to be checked for clearance.............to much and they will leak oil and destroy your valve job.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

There is a reason there is a gasket on the tappet side cover. Leave it off and see what will happen.
