Larger hole for turn or running lights is a later grill.............missing the shroud that yours has for that model.............use your old one.

The turn signal light mounting hole looks like it is made for the larger lights used from 1970 1/2 on although it is clocked different than my 71. The metal tab on the bottom (3rd picture) definitely looks intermediate.

Thanks, all. My original grill is in great shape; I always intended to use it. I just didn't know what the new grill is for. To help fund this project, I'll be selling this new grill, my original tub, fenders, hood, tailgate, access covers, and aftermarket wheels and tires, and an fiberglass hood, my original stuff all has issues (except the fiberglass hood and aftermarket wheels), but someone with body work skills can still use them all.

Right on. Were these retractors original to Intermediates, or just a common after-market accessory?

Don't move it and be very careful. It is a flux capacitor and I haven't seen one since 55. Its very sensitive to speed.

I found this "nipple" sticking out of the side of the bell housing. I think on some of the posts above it is at the location for the engine stay cable but this one is worn off on the back side and rounded on the front. and there isn't anywhere for the stay cable to attach. Any ideas? I'm piecing this old guy back together so we are discovering as we go.

Also looking for some bell housing peek hole cover for the side. Anyone know where I can get one of those?

I think maybe it's the pivot stud for a clutch bell-crank tube. Not used on Early CJs.

What Pete said. An engine stay cable is usually threaded with a nut on the end. It goes through the edge of the bell-housing similar to way the attachment bolts go through the housing.
