Buick 225 Alternator

    Dropped my buick 225 into my CJ3B rolling chassis this weekend. Looking at getting the motor started to see what I have and if I need to rebuild (used motor and I don't know what its history is).

    What alternator are people running? Single wire or orignial?

    More questions to come as keep morving forward.

    I have a 100 amp single wire on mine.
    Works much better than the factory unit.

    If you don't know about the motor then I wouldn't worry about the alternator as of yet. If you have an old alt you can hang on there for the waterpump belt if you plan on running the engine for a long time.

    I believe both the Motorola and Delco mount the same, one Jeep has a a Delco, and the other has a Motorola.

    Of course your project is yours. What you are asking is how to choose better, OK. Your first choice was that you wrote you put a 225 in a 3b, NOT oem. so you are not holding yourself to that standard, hence Walt's comment. The single wire system has fewer parts so that is simpler. You did not say you had the oem three wire Motorola system already. Always buy fewer parts. You now MUST consider what your electrical needs are going to be, super stereo system, extra driving lighting or even ground effects to figure out YOUR wattage load, ENJOY.

    I run OEM Motorola three wire external resistor set up, just like I bought it with. I forgot to answer your question. My only electrical load is my lights. IT DID NOT COME WITH A HEATER OR ELECTRICAL OR AIR DRIVER WIPERS.

    You're looking for opinions-- take into consideration all the above and future posts. And one specific possibility--I'm running a 12 volt Delco-Remy Model 10SI 12:00 "clock" position. If you had to ask for one, it would be for a 1977 Pontiac Grand prix, 8 cyl., 5.7 L (350R) engine w/AC and HBL (rear window defrost). I believe it to be 63 amps. This is on a Dauntless 225 odd-fire in a CJ5.

    I replaced my OEM (external voltage regulator) with a 63amp Delco 3 wire (10SI, internally regulated). Like the simplicity of the internal regulator, and the 3wire as one can then go to the amp light in the speedo cluster. Don't think that is possible with the one wire, but the one wire is very simple. Check out the mad electrical site posted above...very helpful for me. I think mine is clocked at 3. I don't run many accessories so 63 amps is plenty - but I would like to run some extra fog lights and thus went with the 63amp.

    I'm using a 105 Amp 12SI on mine, Single Wire, I wanted the extra juice for lights and winch pulls. I'll be damned if I can remember what application I used to find it though.

    100 amp 10si on mine, for the winch & kc hilites. Much better than the original 35 amp Motorola.

    I just bought the cheapest one for a 1965 buick skylark. That is supposedly what my 225 came out of. It requires an external regulator. Get the single wire alternator and be done with it.
