    Shifter boots are finalized.

The Motor Guard filter arrived yesterday. I got all the air fittings put together, and I made a mount for the filter to attach to the cage via the output tube directly above the sway bar. It all works as it should. OBA!

I still have wipers, tire balancing, I have a plan for the rear pinion angle... I’m not done yet.

YJs had a little snubber bump stop on the front springs located between the axle and the rear spring mount.

This was to prevent axle wrap during hard braking.
This gave me an idea. Why not do the same in the rear to prevent axle wrap during hard acceleration with a load?

I really don’t want to rotate the spring pads, because the pinion angle is perfect with just a driver and front passenger. As the rear is weighted down, the pinion travels up and remains at the same angle, but the U-joint angle changes as the driveshaft levels out. This angle is compounded during acceleration due to axle wrap, and that is what’s causing the vibration. A bumper between the front spring mount and the axle should keep this angle in check.

These bump stops are from the rear of the car I got the engine from. They’re hollow and super squishy. I can compress them 1/2” by hand.

They only require a single hole, so if they don’t work, no harm.

I also trimmed the U-bolts to length, and I pulled all the tires and removed the truckload of gravel from the treads in preparation for balancing.

You could do some '65 Shelby GT-350 style override traction bars if it comes to that:

I had axle wrap issues with my Scout, and I tried almost every imaginable traction bar mount/combination I could think of, and every one of them inhibited flex. The only thing left on my list to try was a Z-link setup, and I sold it before I had a chance to try it. I’d really rather not go down that traction bar road with this. If this can be mitigated with rubber, I’ll be all for it.

Some hot riders put a pinion snubber above the center diff yoke to prevent axle wrap on acceleration.

We’ll see how this one fits first. But it obviously needs a bath. It was up in the loft where only the finest of grinder/saw dust makes it. No idea where it came from, but I’ll take it!

I just got back from getting the tires balanced. I was half-hoping they would come back loaded with lopsided weights to help explain the death wobble issue. I paid $50 for three small weights - total - on 5 tires. I guess tire unbalance wasn’t the issue, unless all the rocks packed in the tread was the main contributor. I’ll need to take a closer look at this and see what’s going on.

It doesn’t make sense; everything from the steering wheel to the tires is either brand new or in great shape, and the horizontal track bar makes a solid connection of the axle to the frame with zero bump steer. Slop in components can’t be a factor.

I’ll have a helper crank back and forth on the wheel while I look for any overlooked issues, but I’m afraid I might have to resort to the dreaded bandaid of a steering stabilizer if nothing is found. :worry: If I could even find any room for one up there...
