Hard Top

Went and looked at a Meyers unit today. Complete with all windows intact and both fronts roll up/ down; ZERO rust thru. Never really paid much attention to them before... I really like my soft top (Supertop) but am wondering how the noise levels compare with a steal unit. How does the front attach to the ws frame? Any pro/ con inputs?

 

I had a hard top on my first cj2a. it was real loud inside.

 

I have one on my jeep . its hard to remove . but that isn't a problem with me . I never take the whole top off anymore just the doors . top bolts to windshield frame .As to noise levels . not too bad .make sure it comes with all the parts .some of those are hard to come by

 

My orville top is noisy but its isnt bad. At one time we made a liner for it and velcro taped it to the inside of it. After a while we just said to heck with it and ran it as is. Sure kept the jeep warm in the winter!

Lol!! Not holding out... had a random local guy IM me so I checked it out this am. Looks like the ws frame door hinge attach points may not have been there. Door strikers and rear hatch lifts are there. Of course I don't know everything that SHOULD be there...

 

Everything else you can make.. If its a good price you should have already bought it.

 

They are quieter than a soft top flapping around IMO, if you make seals for the doors and the hatchback. They can echo a bit but you can soundproof that. I think a hardtop for winter and a sun bonnet for summer are perfect. The hardtop are heavy though.

 

The one on my 6 is stupid loud inside. Maybe it's different with the shorter CJ-5 top? I can't wait to pull mine again this summer. It's so much nicer to drive without it.

 

My Kelly is nice and quiet. I never take the top off just the doors so I have carpet and a headliner in it. For the headliner i fit some 1/4" luon and contact cemented indoor carpet on it. Looks great and nice and quiet

 

I just purchased a metal 1/2 hardtop and matching full top with doors (Myers) for '53 m38a1. The full top needs quite a bit of work, but all the glass is there, half top needs work too, but far less. Anyway, I plan on spraying or rolling the inside with bed liner to dulled the noise.

 

Well, I'm going to pass on this... If I had any plans for a restoration, I would have already bought it. Since I have the luxury of keeping my CJ in the garage or home shop when not driving it; and the weather here in Hampton Roads conducive to keeping the top off for almost half the year, it just doesn't make sense to me. That said; I feel that it is a VERY good deal for someone, and would be willing to assist (within reason) anyone from this site who may want it. I've got pics and will gladly share them with anyone who sends me an IM. I'll talk to the owner and see if he wants me to post it here in the Classifieds section.

 

Talked to the owner again today about the top.... He was a few days from taking it to the recycler due to a relocation to Fl happening on 2/20. In good conscience, I couldn't let that happen so we came to a trade agreement for an old stripped down M-100 (parts only) tub I had lying around. Still not sure what I'm going to do with it besides disassemble and clean for storage. Regardless, another "treasure" is saved from the crusher.

Pretty much Back Home Dickering, Ron!! When he moved it the last time one of the side windows popped out... Not damaged, but I want to reinstall it before splitting apart the sections. All the window rubber is still very pliable, so once I figure out the best way to reinstall it, I will. I also want to open up the doors and see how the mechanisms look. I believe the only thing "needed" (to call this 100% complete) are the WS frame hinge fillers (I have upper/lower hinges) and seeing if Meyer could still make keys if I provide the lock numbers.

 

I went to a locksmith with mine and he made a key for me. He didn't do it off the number though, he did it by inserting a blank in the lock, twisting it hard, and then filing the pattern until it worked.
