Dana 18 t-case with centered rear

Discussion in 'Intermediate CJ-5/6/7/8' started by millennium falcon, Nov 23, 2014.

  1. Ok so I talked to the guy with the willys truck axles. He wants $175 for the pair. I don't know much about them except that they are out of a 60's willys truck and have 5.38 gears.....what do you guys think?

Willys truck axles are too wide for a CJ. Take an early offset and convert it to full floating axles.

  3. He told me they were from a willys truck but I did measure them and they are 53"ish wms to wms??????

Might want to re-measure or your friend is not right on what they came from.
The front of a Willys truck is very close to the same width as a Wagoneer at around 58 1/2" wms to wms and the rear is wider yet.

  5. I measured them myself I they were between 52 and 53 so they must be from a cj right? Will it be hard to find gears for them?

Hey, isnt Dummy on the forum here selling a 71cj D44 rear? Maybe you could get someone to ship it out to you.

also, depending on where in central PA you are, I know Windyhill has a good stash of jeep parts near Hamburg. Maybe he has something he'd be willing to part with.

  7. Ok thanks I will look into both those options! I appreciate the info!

The 44 should be no problem finding gears. The front will depend on what ratio you want and what axle it is. Some are limited on available ratios.

Willys PU did not use Dana model 44.
Early Willy PU ran a 4.88 Timken axle while later PU ran a Model 53 rear axle with 4.88 and higher ratios depending on the engine.

  10. Yeah I think we have concluded they axles he is selling are not from a willys pickup. I' guessing they are from a older cj. I think i'm going to pass though because they would need gears and lot of work.

Willys trucks used a D25 up front and either a Timken or D53 in the rear. None of those would be on my list for potential transplants. The rears would require a substantial narrowing job and there isn't any aftermarket support (or factory for that matter) for either. I don't hold the AMC 20 in too high esteem, but it would be better than the truck axles. At least you can get the pieces to make a 20 work. If this was my project, I would just full float the stock D44-makes a reasonably stout axle and allows use of modern traction devises with 30 spline axle shafts.

  12. Ok so I have decided to find some one piece offset amc 20 axles and build an offset rear with what I have laying around... .So can someone that has a q-trac amc 20 get me and exact measurement of the axle tube length on each side... It would be very much appreciated. I will post pictures once I get underway. Thanks!
