I just purchased a 65 that has an original Bendix radio, but no speaker. Where does the speaker mount? Thanks

    Welcome from Bainbridge Island, WA.

I don't believe Jeep had stock radios in '65. It may have been a dealer addition. Can you post a photo of it and where it is mounted?

To post photos you must use a photo hosting site like Photobucket (free) and using the Insert Image Icon paste the direct link to the photo from the hosting site.

What ever you do please don't cut a hole in your dash. Dashes without stock holes are getting hard to find. :D

if it is an Am radio only, the speaker may be inside. Look for the perforated oval, square or round.

If it's AM only how do you hear the radio in the PM?

Radio is a Bendix with 5 push buttons. Says "Jeep" on the dial. Has speaker wires. It is mounted thru the dash under the grab bar. I just realized, my jeep also has no antenna. Not sure I want to cut any more holes. I will try to post a picture.
    Thanks

I'm sure that Jeep never supplied an in-dash radio for the CJ-5 before 1976. What were made all hung (hanged?) below the dash.

It's a Jeep radio, but from another model Jeep. You are pretty much on your own for speaker mounting.

It really is crazy how many hacked up dashes there are.

I ended up buying a reproduction, which isn't exact but will work out pretty nicely.

The previous owner of my project not only cut a huge hole for a radio, but then also mounted a huge speaker in the dash and drilled about 30 or so 3/8 inch holes right through the dash to look like a speaker grill.

My Dad's Jeep had a radio installed, on the left side of the steering wheel. It was a 70 and my dad bought it in 71 from Hayes Jeep in SLC barely used. I think Hayes installed it at the dealership, and it had the speaker grill in the center of the dash. I know my Dad never would have had it installed, so it must have been there. I can never remember it working. I thought it was a factory installed item as it said Jeep on the tuning face too. But have come to a different conclusion. Its antenna was on the passenger side just in front of the windshield. It looked good whoever did it.

That being said, I don't know how you would ever listen to it going down the road. With the top off, its too noisy. With the top on its too noisy. I don't think AM radios were all that great even back when. When I am going slow, doing what my jeep does best, the motor is sweet music to my ears. If I was going to install one I think now I would just install a small amp with an input for my ipod and install it in the area of the glove box. Out of sight. Something like this: Pyle PLMPA35 2-Channel 300-Watt Mini Amplifier with 3.5mm Input https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HJ931M/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_yjOqub1QDA8VV

Or maybe some gas jug speakers like these, easy to remove.

Before you go to too much trouble I'd suggest hooking an old speaker up to it just to make sure it works, a radio that old, especially if it's been exposed to the elements, is likely to have issues.

The PO put in a am/fm cassett in the dash of my '60.

Don't know where the antenna came from but it is a tape-like affair that sticks to the inside of the windshield, runs straight up the center, T's at the top and goes to the corners.

The speakers are weather proof out door things strapped to the roll bar behind the seats. I don't use it much, but when I do I don't have any trouble hearing the music or whatever even at 50 mph. I run a bikini-type top.

My CB is mounted between the center runners of my roll cage. Antenna is mounted in one of the pockets for the canvas top, (which I don't have, nor want). I don't have any trouble hearing that, either.

I really like that idea (running a single tiny speaker like that). Can you hear it ok-ish while driving around?
