73 i6block

    Howdy all.
    Found a couple inline 6 blocks. Wondering what you think they are worth. Numbers are,,,,,6 9a05 and 6 4 a 05. So the best I can figure they are 1973 258s September, & April.... One is missing the head,,, but the other has the valve cover and timing chain cover,,, hard finds,,,,I was thinking of offering 200 for both...........

    If you need the parts, then go ahead. They aren't worth a lot - unpopular core engines, and one is incomplete. The cranks might be worth having. Cranks from pre-81 258s are supposedly getting scarce, and they are prized for use in 4.6L stroker motors.

    $200 seems generous, from your description. You have maybe $50 or $60 in scrap (a guess) ... I'd offer twice that, hauled away ... unless I really needed the parts. Check what scrap iron prices are locally.

    "A" code is 1V 258 - these are 258s if Dave is reading the code right. "E" code is a 232.

    Where you located Dave. I may go in with you on them for the 258 crank and rods. I'm in Atlanta. You nearby?

    Im in Los Angeles... the place I found them is called jeep thrills on alameda bl... I offered 120 for the pair and he turned it down.... so I dont know if I will come back on that or not.... just sitting on it for now..

    Hey Tim,,, if there is a smaller A stamped above the original A does that mean the engine was rebuilt ??????? and the bore one over or something???one of the blocks exhibits this condition.

    If you want Earl I can give him a better offer and ship the crank to you. how much do you figure we should go on these things to make it worth the trouble?????

    Dunno. I don't have a '73 manual, but the '72 manual shows some undr/oversize makrs in a different location. Independent rebuilders could have their own set of marks, known only to them. At most, it's a hint that it's not a virgin block. Really, you need to measure the bores and journals to be sure, or look at the markings on the crank bearings. An oversize block shouldn't be a big deal for a 258 from this era - it can go 60-over (2 remans, at 30 and 60) easily. Likely it would go even further, but I would scrap a 258 that's already 60-over and needed boring. They just aren't that scarce.

    JMO - any commercial establishment is going to price stuff at retail levels, and it's going to be way dear compared to a private party sale. If I wanted 258 parts, I would canvas my local Jeep and 4x4 forums. I might find some good deals from local Jeepers that have this stuff lying around. Private party sale will be way cheaper than retail.

    Thanks for the offer, but I think shipping from L.A. would be cost prohibitive. I'm probably going to take Tim's advice and just look at local Jeepers to see if anyone's got an old core 258 with a crank they want to get rid of cheap.

    Roger that Tim.. I am not hurting for these things.. I have an extra 258 sitting on a stand in the garage already. I picked it up from a private party for 125 bucks. it sits exactly as it was plucked out of the jeep with all the tin, alternator fan timeing cover manifolds the works. even still has the voltage regulator hangin there. any way... I get your drift... just thought if I could pick these up for a Franklin or there abouts it would be nice...
