Hi everyone , finally got around to doing this . Thought I should share as I gained a lot of good info here. I included a link to a local jeep site for pics . If this is not acceptable i have no problem removing it to make it right.

Dpecided i should start posting my latest project. I bought this a few years ago from a local guy. He had imported it from Washington state. It has from all the research i have done ,has the rare T -18 close ratio transmission. The body is pretty badly rusted. I am working on a replacement from a 1968.
Someone had ,years ago installed a Vega steering box and column . The v-6 is the stock dauntless 225 odd fire and an Offenhauser intake and valve covers. I must say it pulls very well and is fun to drive . It also has the good dana offset flanged 44 with a tightened traclok with 3.73's .

My goal is to restore to as original as possible.

A year I had aquired a 1968 cj5 v-6. With a partially repaired tub. i came with a Kelly hard top. The jeep was complete with all the odd and ends.

I decided to sell off what I didn't need of the 68 as i felt the 71 was more special. the 68 was already in pieces anyway. I ended up getting most of the stufff the 71 was missing. Stock exhaust manifolds and stock streering. The bottom picture is of the 68 chassis.

So as the jeep sits now ,I replaced the crappy Vega column and steering with the stock ROSS box and bellcrank setup. Stock manifolds and exhaust . Stock intake and 2 barrel carb. Stock drum e brake. Stock rims.
As it sits now see bottom pic.

Your local Jeep site is members only.

No local hosting of pictures on this site - sorry.

You can hot link your pictures from bcjeepclub, if you want. As long as the pictures are hosted off the site, you can post whatever you want (within the content rules).

Research bits .if anyone has any thing to add to this I would like to know..

--Transmission Why I think this is a stock factory T-18.

The shift pattern sticker appears to be stock with evidence of being on the original red paint. Along with the serial number sticker that is on the dash panel. The serial number matches the fire wall plant . Original colour looks to be president red . Please see pics below.

--The floor shifter cover has the unique design found in other 4 speeds.

--Has the adapters on the bell to trans and trans to Xfer case.

    Factory floor pans.

Shifter decal is strictly aftermarket, AFAIK.

Pull the cover and look for a tag under the transmission top cover bolt. That would have the correct PN for a close ratio T-18 available that year in the CJ-5. They are scarce...

Thanks ,there is no tag on the transmission . I am going to get the part number on the bell to trans adapter to confirm more... Don't know what to think of the shift sticker though. Looks to have been there along time with the red paint under it. Wonder if someone could have converted it to 4 a speed and just peeled off the 3 speed sticker and put the 4 speed on . If they did ,they did a nice job... Can you elaborate on it being an aftermarket sticker..

    thanks for the info..

Well, nothing more than that. Owner installed, not factory installed. So the Jeep had a 4-speed when it was red. Extremely unlikely it was put there to deceive. Right year, right floors, right transmission.

Original tags are often lost. I'd look at the trans mount too - although some of Jeep's work can look home-made. IIRC you should have a snubber on the passenger side.

Seems unlikely it was converted since it has the factory floors. And most conversions are wide-ratio - you're sure it's a close-ratio transmission? To me, if it's not factory, it is almost certainly a conversion taken from a factory 4-speed donor. And then, it may as well be factory.

Tim, most every late 60's CJ that I have ever seen has had a shift decal on the dash. Are you saying that you remember new Jeeps being sold without these stickers?

    Definitely. Aftermarket.

But I'm too young to remember what they did to new Jeeps in 50s and 60s.

Also, the sticker is too straight and level for Jeep factory work  And they are never in a consistent location.

Having never seen a 71 jeep with a factory 4 speed . and your jeep was built 563 units after mine . floor looks different than a 3 speed jeep . 4WD shifter looks to be right shape , from what I can see , and a overdrive shifter . as to shifter decal . looks to be original decal . yes I said decal . not a reproduction sticker , I say this because when I first got my jeep , back in 1982 in Alabama ,That's what decal looked like . I went to largest jeep dealer in Bessemer, Alabama to get some parts . one of them was a new shifter decal , the one on jeep the PO drilled holes for the CB mike holder .the other was the grab bar , and a few rubber parts . and a FSM .and that shows the 4 speed transmission . So we know there out there . but nobody knows how many were built

My 3 speed sticker looks similar, I would say its factory.

This photo was taken when I was in high school in 1979, it shows the inside of my 71 when it was still relatively new. If you look close, you can see the 3 speed version of the decal in the same location. You can also see the Warn loc-o-matic sticker to the right of the steering column.

Just my .01 but, that 4 spd decal sure looks like it belongs there in terms of it's "patina" and red paint under it.

It was taped off when the dash was painted, red paint showing through where it was scratched like would happen to a decal. I sure think it's factory. I agree though, accuracy was probably up to however the applier felt at the time.

If they are OEM/factory installed, then they will have a Jeep factory PN. If it came from the factory, it would be a service part and show up in factory pictures of the dash, in literature and the parts book. Anybody know of any of these?

I know they were sold out of the glass case at the Jeep dealership (stickers and decals were a popular seller) ... and I'm sure neither of my factory-new CJs ('73 and '75) came with such a sticker. But the D20 shifter has the pattern on the shift knob.

Ah ha. Missed Jim's post. Ok, factory for Kaiser, gone in 1972. Nothing in the book about these for Intermediates.
