Well it is now January 6 and I finally made that call to Kaiser Willys as I was told to do. Several months ago I called looking for a new sector shaft for my Ross steering box. I was told to call back after the first of the year as they have a shipment of them coming in. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment as I was told that they were not in and should be in sometime in the next three months:(
Don't get me wrong, I am in no way mad or upset with Kaiser, they have been very helpful to me in the past, just disappointed since now I have to wait longer for a new one. I just might put it back together and see how it handles. The pivets are worn, I just don't have the experience to say if it's worn enough to really make a difference in the handling. Everything else in the steering system has been replaced except the sector shaft. I don't know if I have the patience to wait any longer, I want to drive this jeep !!

  2. I can't really comment on how a new shaft is gonna help in the handling because I have never done this in a jeep, but have done steering conversations in a couple "hot rods"...a "shaft" is gonna have little to no effect on handling or steering...steering issues are usually tied back to the steering box.

Have you tried any of the following?

    Carl Walck
The Jeepster Man - Morris Ratner
    Northstar Willys
    Peter DeBella Jeep Parts

Google any of these names for contact info....

The shaft he's referring to is an internal part of the steering box.

I picked up an NOS sector for a V6 Ross box from DaBella's about a year ago. It is the same as a M38A1.

    Give him a call. (631) 874-8660

A few of the guys on here have popped those two pivots (guides) out on the shaft and rotated a quarter turn and tacked them back in. I have not done it but it should be same as new.

If you can make sense of these photos, this is considered too worn to be used again. Take a reading with a caliper on the non worn side then turn 90 degrees to the flat spot and take another reading. I got my sector shaft from willy overland.

Are you sure that the sector shaft is bad, or perhaps you only need the bushings to keep it from leaking? Bear in mind that a "repro" sector shaft may be no better than what you have today keeping in mind that there are little or no quality controls in the repro market -- especially if it is Omni Adix...

    best of luck

  12. I am going through my ross box right now for my 59 cj5 with the 4 banger. and since I didn't want to mess with omix quality (or lack thereof) I searched online and found a USA made Crown NOS sector shaft rebuild kit for about $80. I definitely prefer Crown over omix and Crown used to be factory equiptment for jeeps so I like the usa made pieces. for our old jeeps they shared the same part numbers you would just have to add a J0 infront of any willys part number. so a 4 cylinder ross sector shaft kit willys number 805123 becomes J0805123 for a newer and sometimes NOS part. but most of the newer J0805123 parts will likely not be USA made and may just be omix or crown foreign made.

Thanks for all the help and info. I have tried several places with no luck but someone did post a place that's new to me, I'll give them a call tomorrow. If I strike out there, I my just bring it to a friends shop and try to rotate the pivets. I plan to replace bearings, bushings, ect...

Looks like they still have them-- $425 with exchange.

I think that's up 100 bucks from when I first noticed them a few years ago.

Update on sector shaft, I took it to a friends machine shop. He grind down the button on the backside and pressed out the pivots, rotated them and reweld the pivots back. I'll use this and see how it works. Will try to rebuild the Ross back this up coming week.
