heater

Hey I just got one for the jeep, Stewart Warner south winds heater.

my dad used them in his service vans back in the day



Anyone have or still use on?

 

No but I like it. Is it electric (resistance heater)?

 

No it is actually gas powerd.

exhaust hooks to manifold vacuum, and a fitting attaches to the bowl, and vacuum sucks vapor to the burner.Has a glow plug and a baffled fan.

Instant heat.

I am going to do a mild safty restore on it , and that is about it.

They work great.

 

Is that a UL listed sticker?

 

I remember my Dad having one in his 49 Chev pickup. Worked very well.

Something about a gas powered heater (I assume it goes inside the cab?) that makes me think of the jeep becoming a Jeep-a-que.

 

Yeah I know right!

They are actually real safe.The company that made them, is still around, and making gas heaters.

The burner is not open, kinda of sealed, and with a glow plug and not a pilot lite. makes it way safer.

 

Interesting. Looks like you can still get "new" if desired.

Trying to figure out fuel delivery though. Almost looks like an air/fuel mix is siphoned off between carb and intake?

I am mounting mine, between the seats under the window of the half cab.

Or up under the dash.I still have to round up carb fittings and such.

So I am going to give them a call.

Yes a vacuum line hooks to the intake manifold/ or carb adapter(my carb has a vacuum port already), which is the heaters actual exhaust, and the other line hooks to the bowls of the carb, with a T or 90 I think, then when you crank it, the manifold/carb vacuum sucks gas/gas vapor, into the burner area and a glow plug lites it,and heats up the little heat exchanger.and a fan blows the air across the heat exchanger then into the cab.

 

That is cool! With that you could have heat in a vw bug.

 

My dads old service van back in the day had one.

He would crank the truck, and before we got all buckled in and ready to go you had to turn it down LOL.

It warmed that van up fast.

They used to have them in small cargo planes also.

Cool *** little heaters.

I just thought it would look good and work great for my little jeep beast.They are tough and rugged just like these little jeeps

 

these operate on 6 volts. this may be a dumb question but, how can you get it to work in a 12 volt system?

My Dad was a Capetian in the Army. At one point he was in charge of the base motor pool in Nuremberg Germany back in the mid 60's. He told me one time some of the jeeps/trucks had gas powered heaters. Wonder if they were like this? Or something like this?

 

I have seen M38A1s with this heater, they mounted on the passenger side /driver side, And run a duct up to a hole on the windshield, and all other holes where plugged up with rubber inserts.

The louvers on top of the bottom of the windshield frame was where air came out for defrost.

I have also seen some M38A1s with them mounted on the outside of the hood cowling .They where called arctic personal heater kit(Google that some great pdfs with tons of instillation instructions) that I cant post.

If i can track down a vent kit for the windshield frame would be so cool.
