I just welded a 2" receiver socket into my rear bumper of my CJ. I needed a strong point on the rear for light towing, pulling, and the versitility of a receiver hitch. I know CJ's are not rated for heavy towing, so I fabricated a light duty simple receiver hitch. I bought a receiver socket at a trailer hitch shop, cut a hole into the back bumper, slid it in welded it and added a support tie to the angled braces in the rear of the frame. The way I figured it if a pintle could be attached there why not a receiver hitch, now I have one! I have a tagalong (one of those basket things that slide into a receiver) and a bike rack and now a place to use them.

Not sure what the ratings say the CJ is capable of, but the original drawbar setups were designed to drag PTO driven equipment around all day in the field...;)

Looks good though...the receivers are handy doodads. I have a shackle that slides in when I need the towstrap.

Looks good. I've been debating how to do mine. I have a reciever, just haven't done anything yet......

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I notched out the factory draw bar and welded the receiver right in the center of the draw bar. I only use it when pulling the Bantam.

Both look good . I cant go either rout so im going to mount 2 2inch recievers on mine because im going to mount a rear mount tank it the jeep and totally remove my cross. So I figured I could mount them inside of the frame rails . That way I can make a external hitch , tirer carrier or d ring bars. Plus thats keping up with my universal mounting system lol. Anthother thing its going to keep the back of my jeep completly flush , NO knee grabers ;) . I should start on mine in the next 2 weeks after i get the gas tank , to make sure i have no clearance probs .

  10. Joe and Jim: I have a new bumper that I had made that I have yet to install. It has a receiver hitch on it. The only place it will mount is with 4 grade 8 bolts to the rear frame cover right next to the frame. I figure that this is enough to haul a "Jeep" trailer. If more is needed, it would be easy to cut a plate to fit the drawbar mount, bolt that up, and weld it to the bumper. Would have 3 points of attachment that way. Would look much lile Joe's method, but with a 2x4 bumper outwards with the hitch on the bumper.

When I get it mounted, will take pics.

    Jim,
I towed your car trailer around the other day to pick up and drop off my tranny at the shop. Towed real good at 85 mph  j/k I kept it at 60. :D Guess my bumper passes the strength test.

Been meaning to ask what mount you have on your Bantam. Is it a ball or lunette? If the former, any reason for not using a pintle?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

being a civi trailer mine came with a wheel screw down 1 7/8 opening
I replaced that years ago with a 2 " ball "modern" version, just so all my stuff takes a 2" ball
The pintle is ideal for off roading, but I dislike the noise generated from the banging around, on or off road; that is my only dislike of the pintle, noise
