How to pull rear hub?

Hey all. I've encountered a bit of a snag pulling the rear hub off of my '54 3B. It's still got 2 piece shafts (obviously) on the stock D44 and I need to change the brake backing plate, but I've already broken one puller. The hub nut is off, all 6 bolts are out of the flange/backing plate. I figured I'd at least be able to pull the whole shaft out, but that's a no-go as well. Any suggestions?

 

If your 3B D44 is similar to the tapered end axle/hub assembly of my '47 CJ2A Dana 41, then the best way to pull it would be with a special hub puller. J.C. Whitney sells it for about $50-$60 last time I checked. If you go to www.thecj2apage.com and search for hub puller, you should see a few threads with pics of what it looks like.

Another method that I've used, but don't necessarily recommend, is to loosen the hub nut a bit, then drive your 3B back and forth over some logs or bumps or holes or something. That should help loosen the hub off, but you have to be careful that you don't end up having the wheel/hub assembly fall completely off.

That JCWhitney hub puller looks like it'll do the trick. The only bummer is I have to wait for shipping. I was hoping to be done with this tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for heading me in the right direstion.

 

I stopped at a garage sale one day and there was a hub puller there. Bought itfor $1. the guy said it was in the garage when they bought the house(the older gentleman passed away that lived there) and that he didn't have a clue as what it was for. I agree with w3srl that the local parts store might have a rental.

If your going to work on your stuff and have 2 piece axles you have to get one.
As soon as you use it you'll go.... duh.

Keep the nut on the end when you pull it so it doesnt come flying off.
just like when you pull a steering wheel.

For what its worth I ran into a problem with the hub puller that I purchased, The tool works great but it only came with 3 pulling arms, I bent one hub before I realized that there is no way to apply even pressure to the hub with a five bolt layout using 3 points.... you need to pull on all 5 studs.I went back and my FLAPS was able to locate a puller that had some parts missing and was able to get 2 more arms so I could have 5 to evenly distribute the pressure.

 

Trust me, I know that feeling already. Looks like a trip to Autozone is in order to see if they have one to rent/loan.

 

I have a local NAPA, but they hate seeing me walk in. They usually have to blow the dust of of the old books for me. I don't think they rent or even sell the hub puller, but you never know. I may just drive over there now and check it out.

I drew the bolt pattern in AutoCad, printed, rubber cemented to 1/2" plate, worked perfect.

I thought about doing this yesterday, but my scrap pile was a little short on plate.

I saw that one on there, but it says for up to a 5" bolt circle, not 5.5". It still works well?
