Heater Cable Questions, '61 Cj5

    I've got two questions. On an early ('61) CJ5 with cable heater controls one of the cables goes to the defrost door. Another goes to the blend door on the heater core housing. Where does the third cable go? It was broken off behind the control panel and I don't see and obvious destination. Second question-is it possible there is a similar heater cable on early Broncos? I haven't found any replacements. Only for intermediates and late CJ's.

    The third was for a flow shut-off valve on the head that feeds the coolant. It's not needed but 85ish Toyota pickups used an inline cable control valve that is an easy splice into the heater hose. A hot water ball valve works the same but you want the bypass hose on the water pump if you shut it off at the heater.

    My 67 had vacuum dash pots controlling the flaps. They were toast as well as the heater control box with vacuum switches. So, I decided to go with a cable control, mainly because I have a NOS heater control for a 1958 Ford sedan that has been on my shelf for years. It has a switch for the heater motor, three cable controls, and is lighted. Old Fords had a cable control valve on the heater hose, but good to know about the Toyota pickup valve, might be easier to source.

    I don't think that's how the one I worked with was set up. Mine has 3 knobs. Heat / cold which works the door in the heater core, defrost which controls that door. Third is air control which is a rotary switch for the two speed fan and also push / pull to control a door that blocks or opens the duct from the outside into the cab

    The recirculating and hot cold you described are the same physical baffle, hot / cold should go to the coolant flow valve.
