"D" Ring education....

OK guys, I'm working on the bumper/spare rack, and I want to put on some clevises/shackles. Basically the clevis mounts will be 2 pieces of angle welded together against the bumper, and the bolts will go through the "feet" of the clevis mounts, the bumper, and then the frame. All the stress will be transmitted right to the frame via the grade 8 bolts I'm using to mount it. By design the bolts will be right next to the frame rail, so stress on the rear crossmember will be minimal. Sound like a good idea?

Also, what do I need to know about clevises/shackles? Can I just purchase a pair at the local Ace Hardware, or do I need to get something beefier?

If I've totally botched my Jeep vocabulary and confused everyone, see http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Recovery/index.html
and look for the definition/picture for "clevis".

    TIA

Hey, Cool Tim. Any idea what the dimentions are on the brackets? I've got some rings I just got that I was going to bolt on a square tube where the rear crossmember bolts to the frame rails. Basicly I was going to take out the bolts holding the bumper on and replace with new ones long enough for the tube, then drill a hole for the D-ring.

Still gotta find out if I can get the square steel first though. That looks a little beefier than what I was planning.

Brian - I'm not sure what the deminsions are on those mounts from R&P. According to Nick Miller - the owners are super-nice. You could probably call them up and they would measure them for you.

Here is another idea that I like (if you want a weld-on mount):

Price is right at $10 each. And he even sells the clevis' for $10 each...

I was looking at these the other day. They look a lot like the spring hangers for an early CJ. The only problem is that the hangers have a steel tube welded in, which holds the bushing. Perhaps someone removed the tube and used the rest for the D-ring bracket?

Or maybe they're something different all together and it just looks that way from the pictures...

I like those too. Might have some extra spring hangers on that junk frame if the pieces are still laying around out back.

Those look like the brackets we had along time ago for a towbar from Tomkin I think.
I dont think the spring hangers are strong enough guys. They bend to easy.
Thats not a good thing if you are hooked to a cable. ;)

They aren't spring hangers. First off, they are too wide. And, they are way thicker than factory spring hangers..........

Ok, the flash reflected back on the tape measure, but you can tell they are not spring hangers......

Nope, they're stamped. Look like they were supposed to be what they are, if you know what i mean.

Hmmm - so the mystery continues...

Sure would be nice to find something that would serve this purpose. Heck, anyone can make a braket of some sort (square stock, angle iron, thick plate steel) - I've always ran into a road block at drilling a 1" hole... Sure, you could take it to a machine shop and have them mill the hole, but that will blow the whole "cheap-DIY" aspect out the window.

There has to be some sort of bracket out there that would serve the purpose of hanging a D-ring... Maybe something from a tractor? Or some other fabrication piece...

    [scratching head]

I really like the ones from R&P, but $60 for two of them is more than I want to pay.
