red61cj5 Just fell off the turnip truck!

Saw an ad for a 64 cj5, body is pretty rough, but its got a nice looking metal hardtop (did they have those originally?) he wants a grand, says it runs and moves, but has no title. Good deal or no?

Depends if you need one or not, or know someone who does.
Heavy to move, almost impossible to ship, and worth very little if no one wants it more than you.
Metal tops were an aftermarket accessory, usually installed by dealers or others.
No title = parts rig in most places. 1K is too much IMO.
Where are you located, and how bad do you want one?

Here's some info on Jeep hardtops for you:

As for value, they go for $100 - $500 depending on condition, style and how badly the buyer wants it. Some of the tops have small door hinges that bolt to the windshield and cowl, be sure to get them, they're almost impossible to find if you have to go looking for them.

For what it's worth, I had a Meyer hard top for sale for about a month with no bites at $200 OBO. It was fairly complete (everything but the side glass and rear door). I ended up trading it for 4 wheels and a RF fender. The top may be worth some money to someone, but you might have to sit on it for quite a while before the right person comes along.

It seems like a bit much unless you really want it, I would hole out for a better deal. I picked up a 59 with not title with a sears hardtop and a warn overdrive for 500$. Sometimes it's better to hold out.

The value of the top is totally dependent on your location and the condition. In the Northwest they are worth a lot more then in other areas. Here for a complete top in useable condition, I can get $500 pretty easy. Others have said in previous posts that they are all but giveaway items elsewhere.

Any pics of the top? Wouldn't hurt to know what brand it is.

In the south, they are pretty much worthless for two reasons. One is because of it's design. If you ever drove a jeep with one you pretty much need ear plugs. It rattles so bad its about like taking a soup can filled with nuts and bolts and shaking it up against your ear. It's not just an annoyance, it can hurt your ears. The other problem is that it doesn't get cold enough down here to tell the difference between it and a soft top. I'm sure in the great north, you can stick insulation on the inside of the panels and get it toasty so there is a difference between it and a soft top

I had one that came with my 70 cj. It was in pretty good shape, surface rust only and all of the glass was good, and had the doors with it. I couldn't find a brand name on it either. Sold it for 450.00 but, I would have to agree with all of the others, you need to find the right buyer at the right time, which is what happened in my case. I would probably keep lookin'. I think I got lucky. I wouldn't give that for one.

  13. Funny that I found this thread, I was just out in my shop looking at how much room my Meyers cab is taking up and thought about selling or trading it for a soft top. What the other folks here have said is true it's loud as hell, but looks cool IMHO. But for me taking the cab on and off is too much of a hassle.
