Steering column angle in a flat fender??

You guys who have done a Saginaw conversion in a vintage flat fender, are you changing the steering column angle at all? I have a tilt column, which gives me a little more room, but are you guys cutting up into the dash and tilting the column up a bit to get a little more clearance in your midsection? Just curious.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

Changed out my column on my '69. Had to change the angle and cut the dash. Very happy but will upgrade to a tilt someday. Used a '78 CJ7 column. Already had a Saginaw conversion with the column in the factory location.

I use tilt columns - angle is very close to stock as I use the same lines. The top is changed a touch to allow for the larger diam in tube.

2x on Chucks comment. I think my 3B column sits very close to the stock position and works well with a tilt. It wasn't necessary to cut the dash.

I went with a postal column on the flatty and put it pretty buch in the same location and angle as stock. I did have to cut the mounting beacket off and move it down 1"-2" to get the wheel up off my knees but it worked really well. Looked completely stock!

Well, I am leaving my angle stock, using a tilt column. But damn, I think the column is a tad long. Its 28" and i have to stick it up pretty high aboce the dash (too high IMHO) to get the bottom high enough for the steering shaft to clear the left side engine mount. I think I should have gone with a 24" column. Any thoughts? Guess I could cut it off and re-bush or re-bearing the end.

Many of my setups have the shaft going through the motor mount. Be sure to check the angles carefully so you don't get a bind.

I used a Cherokee column in my 3A with no problem. I notched the drivers side body mount to the left a little but that was all. I even used the Cherokee upper mount bolted to the bottom of the dash in the same location as the stock column.

Used a 30" on the 3B, but you need to factor in the steering wheel dish also. I used a flat wheel (no dish) with the 30". The previous column was 28" with a dished wheel.

iv got a dj column in mine and ran the shaft through the motor mount. It was too low with the stock dash mount so i shimmed it down with some washers. Just enough to lave room for my fingers between the windshield. iv got dodge van seats so theyre thicker than stock but im skinny so the legs arnt a problem
