Difficulty of Dana 18 rebuild?

I did a search but came up with nothing... How difficult is it to rebuild a Dana 18? Mine is starting to make terrible sounds, so I want to go through it before something breaks. I'd rather just do it myself rather than send it someplace. I'm a pro with the wrenches, just never done anything exactly like this before. Is this something I can do in my shop? Do I need any special tools?

  2. I did mine last weekend, takes longer to clean it than rebuild it :) no special tools I would say from 1 to 5 about a 1 1/2 ,2 maybe

I did my 20. Not to hard, get instructions on line to help guide you. I put 3.15's in mine.

Sounds great guys. I'll have to order up a rebuild kit. I think I'll leave the tranny alone. It's an SM465 and works perfect so I'll leave well enough alone :)

I rebuilt my 18 this past winter, I didn't do the tranny then, but now the t 90 is starting to pop out of second gear. Shoulda rebuilt them both while they were out. just sayin!

But it is pretty easy to rebuild.......almost fun!

I also did my d18 and had never done any type of gear box before. It's not too hard and pretty satisfiying.

Make sure you use the novak shaft. I think I ordered my parts from Herm.

I rebuilt both my D-18 and T-90 this past year for the first time. I had never done anything like it before, and it was definitely doable. I was VERY nervous about my abilities beforehand, but following the instructions that you can find online made it very easy.

Jason-- If popping out of second gear in your T90 is the only issue and a whole rebuild is not needed. That can be fixed with the trans in the jeep without removal.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Not if the cause is the second gear bushing or the 2nd/3rd gear synchronizer assembly.
If the cause is the shifter assembly then it can be.
