I loosley mounted some new Bestop Lowbacks with what I'm assuming are the original brackets for a 69. Well it seems they sit very high up, maybe even too high. Does this look right or am I all messed up? Any input would be appreciated.

  2. When i nstalled my seats, I tried to get my normal driving line of sight about center in the window. Was hard to do and still have legroom.

I put a set of Bestop seats in my 1971 CJ. They seem to sit about an inch higher than the stock seats when mounted on the original brackets.

How high do the smittybuilt ones sit? Lower than my picture?

The seat cushion for the bottom on these bestops are almost 8", are there any aftermarket lowbacks that have a thinner cushion?

noahlon, his Bestop Lowbacks look very much like the stock "early" CJ seats, IMHO.

Stock seats have less foam in the bottom cushion. That the only difference.

I have a stock original intact seat in the garage still on the original frame. Can measure tomorrow if interested for comparison.

If the smittybuilt or rugged ridge lowbacks have less cushion then I'm going to switch to that, I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone has those could measure the cushion height. The bestops work but I would like more clearance to sit lower.

Just measured them. 4" at the thickest part. Pass. seat back folds foreward, drivers is fixed. They are original, just recovered with no additional padding.

The wheel is supposed to be a certain height above the top surface of the seat. 9 inches if memory serves from the bottom of the steering wheel to the top of the cushion.

I used to have a set of those diagram drawings for the CJ5 showing things like what the height of the tailgate opening from the ground is and over all height, width, and length. That was one of the measurement. The drawings for the CJ3A/3B may have that info also. The distance from the bottom edge of the steering wheel to the top leading edge of the seat could be one of those constant things that are the same for all early CJ's.

I think your seats look nice and look about right on height.

These are factory 71 seats and brackets in a 67. The driver's side sits lower. I think it originally had spacers or adjusters for the driver.

Yeah this helps out alot, its hard to judge since so many seats are different builds, but now I have a good idea on how they fit in there. Factory had alot more clearance, I'm going to try to move in that direction instead of the aftermarket bestops. Thank you all for your help.
