    tires 31" at's

    now the questions

the carter on the jeep needs rebuild idles weird and stumbles i have access to a nib solex carb is it worth the swap? i know i need to add fpr to it and replace the electric pump with a stock mechanical one

and right now the points are good but they will need replaced/ adjusted is pertonix worth it i have never ran it so i am asking?

other than change all the fluids any thing i need to make it a better dd

really depends on what you want/expect from a DD........I have a 66 cj6 that started out with the same spec as yours........I drove on city streets and back roads just fine with it, if the wind is blowing in your face it'll be 10-15mph slower :).........I'd jump on the freeway once in awhile but unless your going downhill 55-60 mph is gonna be max and slow getting there..........if you can drive backroads then make sure youe brakes are in tip top condition and go for it

  3. You may want to look for a warn overdrive to make it a more comfortable DD

The aerodynamics are a formidable barrier. With 4.27s and 31s you are likely running out of power at top speed, rather than revs. I kinda doubt an overdrive would help much - you may be able to go faster without it.

I'd say be happy with 45-50 tops if you keep the F134.

Also remember that you're talking about using a 46 year old vehicle as a daily driver. Make sure all your brakes and steering and tires are in good condition before you start mixin' it up in traffic.

electronic ignition is nice but i would wait and see where it needs improvement,
make a list of what is fine and what is not after you drive.
i drove my CJ5 10 country miles to high school just fine stock,
but when I got to college it was not.

i know the top speed is about 45 and i understand and know problems with with driving a 47year old dd is not for every one but this cj6 is awesome i really don't drive on the highway at all i live 2 miles from work in town so it will be an a to b type thing my main issues are are the upgrades worth it i have already replaced the brakes and some of the steering components that was worn i am looking to make this turn key go vroom and not have to get out and dick with the carb to make it start at 11:30 at night when i get off work

my semi current dd/tow pig is a 67 3/4 ton chevy (the th400 needs rebuild all it has is second gear) i am not new to driving old cars and trucks

i am really looking for feed back on on the carb and the electronic ignition are they worth it

it will cost me the same for the new solex or the rebuild kit

and with the points my only real dealing with them is pulling them out with the distributor and installing hei on a sbc so i will be behind the curve on them and trying to learn as i go

Brian P did an excellent rebuild on my Carter YF, which got fantastic mileage (16mpg) towing a trailer (800lbs) on the interstate (60mph),
I would go pertronix because if it fries you can still drop in points.
the 10" brakes should do fine around town.
aside from that, look for a heater and good wipers

top speed of 45? maybe towing a trailer uphill  drop the windshield. wear a helmet. I'll hit 60

also i am ditching the plastic fuel cell in the bed and and reinstalling the steal under seat gas tank the tank i got has some rust inside but no holes is there a coating that you could recomend that will not disolve while the jeep is stored for the winter with a full tank and that will plug up the fuel filter and make the jeep not start next spring

I used the Bill Hirsch tank coating on my CJ-6. It's been a couple of years and it seems fine so far. I followed their instructions, and it took a couple of days of cleaning, drying, prep'ing, drying and coating, but it seems to be fine. I expect that good results like this depends a lot on how well you carry out the process.

after 45 it sounds like it is going to blow i have no tach so i don't know rpm but i guess it to be 3k according to the tire size gear ratio chart and i know the f-head does not like rpms so i take it easy on it i am looking to go up to a 32/33 for tires but it needs a lift for that and i plan to keep this semi stock

The Pertronix unit is a worthwhile upgrade. These have proven to be quite reliable, many users on this forum.
    Good luck, keep us posted!

    yes pertronix
i used my 63 as a dd for quite a while (back roads also)
i rebuilt /replaced all my steering and brake stuff.
    it did fine.
where i live it gets cold so i installed a good heater as well as a coolant heater

Adding electronic ignition is always worth it IMO. I have done it to many vehicles and each started and drove better. You will notice it as soon as you turn the key.

ok i went to oriellys today to get a quote on the pertronix and i got told 1 my jeep does not exist and 2 they don't make pertonix for a jeep i got stuck dealing with the idiot

so from what i read here the only advantage of the pertronix is less maintanance points work if they did not they would not have used them for 40yrs so i like less maintanace so i will probably pick them up

with the solex every one says rebuild the carter and no one says run the solex but i am only paying $20 for the solex and case the po bought it for the jeep and has nothing to put it on so he offered it to me

i am still undecided on the carb it is has a vaccuum leak so idk

skip oreilly's (and the rest of the big box type stores) and go to NAPA or F.L.A.P.S. [Friendly Local Auto Parts Store] you know the little independent shop with the guys who KNOW stuff about cars.

Regarding the Carter vs. Solex question, I have had great luck with my solex once I tuned it for highest vacuum. It seems to be much easier to tune than the carter, but that just may have been from my carter being worn out.

I can't believe we are discussing "performance" and "F-head" in the same thread! How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? We aren't driving Porsches here. These machines (Jeeps) worked well enough for many decades to establish the reputation that made them a world-wide synonym for "unstopppable."

I have used F-heads as daily drivers for much of my life, in all weathers. Tune it (w/new plugs, condenser & points) once a year and it should be fine. I have no issues at all with the stock YF carbs, if they are rebuilt right.

With stock carbs and ignition, problems tend to emerge gradually and they will get you home before they die, or if not can be tinkered on the trail. Black box stuff can utterly die without any warning.

Call me a Luddite, but my personal philosophy is that the more stock you keep it, the easier it is to troubleshoot and replace parts. Install a bunch of modifications and you complicate solving any issues.

Besides, in this particular case we are only talking 2 miles to work. I walked that far to school, in the snow, uphill.
