Just bought my new cj5

    :D i just got home with my new 1974 cj5 :D :D
    where to start...
    well it drives, it has a new engine, wheels and tires but needs everything else. all the lights and electrical seems to work as well.
    i believe it has the 232 stright six (figured it out from the vin#) and i know it has a three speed tranny.
    it does not really have any brakes to speak of or much of an interior.
    also the tranfer case leaks and i am sure every fluid in the jeep (oil, gear box, diffs...) need to be replaced.
    anyway i am looking for any advice on where to start and what to do first.
    in the end i would like a solid driver i can drive where-ever and off-road w/o worries of if i will make it there and back. i am not looking for a rock crawler or a mud-bogger, just a normal tough jeep.
    again any advicw would help.

    Congratulations! Looks neat. I'd start by getting it driving first. Changing the fluids, fixing the brakes, etc. Then I'd take that tow bar off. Won't be needing that anymore, right?

    Looks good, should be a fun project. As for the brakes, the '74 has 11" drums at all corners. Just rebuild them with new shoes, cylinders and hardware. Drain the lines, rebuild or replace the MC.
    The 11s should serve you well. You can always drill the drums for further improvement.

    As Eric said, drain and replace all the fluids.

    Congratulations Z, looks good. I agree with Eric and Lynn. My order would be brakes first (safety) then fluids, grease then a tune-up. Good Luck.

    I'd agree about the brakes. However, the very first thing I'd do is buy a factory service manual (FSM). The FSMs are far and away your best source of info. If you can find an original copy, they are the easiest to use. You can also buy a photocopy - they're ok, just not as handy and the picture quality is not as good.

    Also, the AMC inline 6s are stamped with a code above and between the #2 and #3 spark plugs. The code is described in the FSM, or we can help decode it. This will ID your engine exactly.

    Congrats on the cj! Nice project... Ditto with the rest of the bunch. Brakes and fluids first.
