i started gathering parts to repair my fried front hub. i thought about going to disks but i will have to buy new rotors and calipers, the ones i found i couldnt save. after some part research i found it would be semi xpensive. i am planning on putting 35s on it soon. would i be better off just putting a 44 up front or fix the 30.

The "generally" accepted thought is the D30 is OK with 33s, and will take a fair amount of abuse. Running 35s can break it much quicker, depending on the terrain and your right foot. Sure lots of guys run 35s on a D30 without problem... but the D30 just won't be as forgiving with 35s as it will with 33s.

    JMHO, YMMV ;)

I agree with Lynn, you can get by with the D30, but it all depends on the way you drive.

ARB has a new kit to put D44 axles in a D30 housing, the kit also includes an air locker.
I know it would be expensive but I was just wonding what you all think of this?

mike the problem that most people i have talked to about that upgrade is that if you break an axle then you have to have a spair no one else will have one to lend you. also do they have one for a cj yet? i know they have the TJ YJ XJ/MJ ZJ one but i have not heard of a CJ one yet.

my opinion for what it is worth. not unless you broke stock shafts. its kinda one of those well i broke it might as well upgrade things.

thats what i kinda thought...i am gonna replace whats broke for now. when summer wheeling time comes and i inevitably break something i will have enough $ to go with a full custom d44 front...

a d30 that isnt locked will hold up to a TON more than a locked d30, so the alloy shafts would be a good idea if you get a locker. Otherwise - normal d30 shafts can be found at any autozone, advance auto... bla bla bla where a non stock spline different shaft is harder to find. Look into makiing a front hub a weak point - thoes are easier to change and cheaper...

All my advice is fully substantiated by my own opinion...

Skip the locker in the front and use a positraction and you can run 35's no problem. I've been to hell and back with 33's on my D27 and have never broken an axle or a U joint. Knock on wood!
