We can sometimes hear the jet engines from Whidbey I. NAS. Last place I lived in SD Co. was Julian.

Julian is pretty nice, my favorite summer escape from the triple digit heat area is around Idyllwild.

If you ever get down south again, look me up.

Replaced the super stiff rear springs with some CJ-5 springs, MUCH better! Still need to replace those stiff goofball front springs.

Also put some cheap 31x1-50 tires on it.

Pic out looking at a compost turner, aka giant poo flinger.

Very cool picture with the Superstition Mtns. in the background. This should be a January calendar photo!
    Thanks David

Looks like one of the best places to stay away from during monsoon season!

I think the engine may be kaput. Loud bang, clanking noise, missing.

Thinking about putting a slightly more modern 4cyl or V6 in it, granny first trans would be nice, as well as OD, probably swap axles too, open knuckles discs in front and centered rear diff. Looking for suggestions and ideas. Thanks

Did some digging around the internets to refresh my memory on the older jeep drive trains. A friend has a TBI 5.7 that needs a head gasket, and I have a couple ooooold SM420s as well as a narrow track open knuckle front axle with 4.88s and a lunchbox locker. An overdrive, gear ratio change, traction device, and a full floater kit for the rear should finish it out.

Gonna fix the F-head after all, got the head off. Hole in #1 piston, cylinders don't look too bad so far. It was rebuilt in '83 or so. The builder/engine machinist is a friend of ours and is still around. It's always had what I thought was excessive vibration. and clutch has always made a funny zing zing noise, like something light is dragging, so going to pull the engine and see about flywheel balance and clutch. Anything else F-head specific we should look at or improvements we can make while it's apart? Going to San Diego tomorrow, so trying to get the parts list together today so I can get what we need from Border Parts.

    Thanks!

Is there any kind of consensus on which aftermarket universal wiring harness is preferred? Painle$$ excluded. :) I want a nice simple basic one with all the wires marked. No extras on the Jeep, just headlights, stop turn, tail. Has an aftermarket universal column mounted turn signal.

    Maybe a cig lighter/phone charger.

    Thanks

I think the EZ wire harness is the way to go. Lots of great reviews on it.

I've used Speedway's house brand 12 circuit (#910-64017) and they have worked well and are reasonably priced around $144 vs Painless 12 circuit at $363.

I used the EZ Wire kit on my 67 and it turned out great.

Back to the engine...jeep was losing power after cruising a few minutes, so it was lean. The odd thing is, one piston melted at the top and the rest are perfect. Think a valve affected the one piston?

Engine is STILL out, waiting on the machinist...overdrive finally showed up...

Can anyone recommend a good engine assembler in the San Diego area? I'm not going to have time.

    Thanks

Engine STILL with the engine guy. Just came across a project jeep with a 4.3 in it $ cheap. My wife likes to drive the jeep, and we have dunes, so thinking about a TH350 too, but how bad might front DL to pan clearance be? We build drivelines, I could offset with a carrier bearing if necessary/possible.
