I guess this is research? None the less..on the "Roy Rodgers" show,Pat Bradey's Jeep "nelle belle",sometimes has these big ol' extension things on the wheels. Were these used with rope as a winch type deal?

My dad has an old post WW2 military TM manual that is all about vehicle recovery in the field. One of the sections shows how to make a winch with a tire iron and a rope when a CCKW is stuck. You put a loop in the end of the rope, sting it through the tire iron and put it in the center of the dually wheels on one side of the rear end. It made a winch "drum" kind of deal. Very interesting

Is there a link to that TM that you've been able to find? TM number?

The one I have that shows the rope trick is Army TM 21-305 / USAF 77-2. November 1965 edition. Motor Vehicles manual for the Wheeled Vehicle Driver.

Another cool one is the Priciples of Automotive Vehicles TM 9-8000 / USAF 36A-1-76. January 1956 edition.

Then there's the one on explosives and demolition...........

I think it might also be in FM5-34, Engineer Handbook. I have seen it before but was not a truck driver.
