Pull the motor and plate back out and have a look inside with a flashlight.
You never know what you will find in there.

My squirrel cage had been eaten by mice.

I pulled my air intake hose out last night and it was full of dust, dirt-dobber nests, and pine needles. I have a new hose that I'm going to install. My blower works but I thought about taking it out to see what I can find. Does anyone know if the replacement motors are just as loud?

Is the rotation correct? Pull the air intake hose with blower "ON" and see which direction the air is moving. Are the duct flappers opening and closing?

Don't know - I'm just glad that mine works.

The intermediate heater is pretty easy to remove. Disconnect all the controls, hoses and cables, remove the battery box (IIRC) and there are a handfull of nuts that hold the heater to the firewall. Remove these and the whole unit comes out. It would be easier to assess on the bench.

This article http://www.jeeptech.com/body/heater.html shows the well-known heater motor upgrade for the '77.5 and up CJ heater. This later heater has the motor protruding through the firewall instead of into the passenger compartment, but I expect you can do the same thing to the earlier heaters ('72-77.5). According to the parts book, the heater motor comes off of the mounting plate. You won't even have to remove the housing from the Jeep.

John Strenk gives a part number for the correct rotation motor in this post. http://forums.off-road.com/jeep-short-wheelbase/230810-77-cj5-heater-blower-motor-upgrade-2.html He also gives a copule of links to posts on CJ-offroad that are gone... maybe they are elsewhere on the net.
