Air Filter in early housing

Does anyone know if someone makes a newer style cotton or paper element that would take the place of metal screen in an original oil bath air cleaner?
I would like to keep the original look.:?

 

There is a conversion that can be done. I don't remember for sure which site it was on but either Derek Redmond's CJ-3b site or G-503.com
I would guess the 3b site as the other is more military restoration in flavor.

I'm not aware of a drop in element but there may be something out there.

 

I worried about doing that to mine for a long time but then when I did it, it was fairly easy and works well. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow, describe what I did and what paper filter I used.

I know that I read a nice write-up with pics. I just can't remember where it was.

I was sure that someone had dealt with this previously. Too cool! Thank you Andy, Greg and Nickmil. I believe I can mock up the adapter, looks pretty straightforward. This site has a great source of knowledge in it's members. You all ROCK! More dimensions would have been nice in the sketch though.....

Dang! Another project on top of the pile. One day, my wife's gonna find me buried out in the garage...

 

I'm just asking, but, isn;t the oil bath design actually pretty good, why would you want to change it? Benefits, drawbacks. sure, the oil can be messy, but it's seems like the KISS principle wins hands down to me?

 

the PO modded mine.
i took it off ,threw it in the shed
and replaced it with the oil bath.
i never understood the argument that they are messy.
we are talking about 50 year old vehicles that leak everywhere aren't we?

 

Okay, this begs the question- has anyone actually compared the filtering qualities of the "oil bath" verus the dry filter.... Is the oil bath just as effective? Inquiring minds demand to know! flow rates, filter efficiencies.....

 

i always assumed it was convenience that was the reason for the change.
all that multi-million dollar heavy equipment machinery that still use oil baths ...

back in '79 i traded in a bronco (mistake)! on a new f100 4x4. it had a 300 six (mistake # two)! anyway it had an oil bath air cleaner on it. it was an extra cost option!

The oil bath style typically are better at filtration but are also more typically neglected and are messier during service (probably why they tend to be neglected).
To do a side by side flow measurement, etc. would require a very expensive flow bench.
Having said that, there is a reason heavy equipment runs them in dusty/industrial applications...

Used oil can be recycled into other things. Dry filters typically get thrown in landfills.

Just a few things to consider.

Must admit it is nice having less consumables involved. Staying "greener" by staying older (original). Seems odd at first glance. There's an article in this for JP i would think........:JEEP:
