First of all Hello to everyone. I just purchased a 1975 CJ5 and on my first night drive I experienced some problems with my headlights turning off and on. I wanted to get some more ideas as to what all needs to be checked to remedy this issue. Any input is welcome. Thanks.

Welcome Tigran from Mississippi...sounds like a loose wire somewhere. Just start @ the switch and work your way to the lights. Wiggle here and there and you should find it.

Welcome from Mass, like they said, lights switch on and "wiggle".

    michigan_pinstripes I'm not lost, I'm wandering

Maybe mine is waaaaay too old but many old switches have contacts that get krusty. Inspection will appear fine but it doesn't take much to stop 12V. I had to run a piece of 1200 sandpaper through the contacts to finally get the switch to operate again.

might have a hort in wiring. on/off would be the breaker working.

Mine was the dimmer switch. It died. Made the lights turn off, then they would come back on. Replaced the switch and no problems since.

My 67 did that, and I found a broken wire right at the back of the headlight switch.. Seems some squid did a back yard rewire and left a terminal block hangin loose.. I pulled the dash off and re-wired to my liking.. And i mounted the wayward terminal block to the fire wall..

My 72 did the same thing. My dimmer was the problem as well it sits out in the weather more or less. Lots of spray from the left front tire.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

the breaker mentioned here is built into the headlight switch.
they can get weak; but if you can't find any other cause, replacing the switch might cure it

Thanks to everyone for the ideas. It turned out to be the headlight switch causing all the problems. Replaced the switch and I can once again drive at night.
