225 loss of power/dies @ idle

Maybe someone can help me with a mysterious problem I'm having with my 225. The engine has an intermittent loss of power @ freeway speed (can't pull in overdrive). When I come off the freeway ramp and idle at a light, the engine losses rpm and dies. Here is the wierd part. The engine then will not start but issues a blue cloud of bad spelling smoke out of both side pipes. After a few minutes of sitting, the engine will crank w/o issuing the mysterious blue cloud of smoke, then starts with a thick black cloud as if it had been flooded out. I've replaced points, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and fuel filter. I've had a carberator man open up the G2. He says everything looks ok. Has anyone had a similar experience?

 

fuel pump?cracked rubber fuel line?

 

is the fuel cap vented?

 

I'm guessing timing/distributor/advance problem.

Its the "blue cloud" while cranking which puzzles me. I've never seen anything like it before. Does a blue cloud always mean oil is being burned in the cylinders? If so, the logical cause must be oil fouling the plugs. But if that is the case, why aren't the plugs being fouled all of the time? Why does the vehicle start after a short cooling off period w/o the blue cloud being present? Also, How can oil foul both sides of the engine block at the same time? Is there a way for oil to get into the intake manifold such as a gasket which is just beginning to leak intermittently?

 

Going to put my money on timing and/or your carburetor being out of adjustment. And that you have a bad valve(s).
Couple others. Vacuum leak or pcv routed incorrectly. Electric Choke not working/sticking/closing at hot temps.

Replace your plugs, degrease your engine, Check for intake leaks(starting fluid around the gasket), check your timing, disconnect your electric choke(if you have one)install a temp cable. Blow your vacuum lines checking for worn rubber. pull your air cleaner and run it.

 

Well, I spent a couple of hours with the help of Mike from Conejo Carburator. The jeep "kermit" acted up for Mike who said he swore the ignition lacked spark at first, then mysteriously appeared again. I came to the conclusion that the culprit is the anti-theft system. This was put on by the P.O. It was about all that was left in the ignition system which I haven't replaced. Took the anti-theft off and Kermit ran with new spirit back to Simi (about 30 miles). Time will tell if the mystery is solved or not. Thanks for those who offered their help and opinions.:tea:
