On the 5 are not most battery trays on the passenger side fire wall?
Mine is on the frame beside the rad right behind the grill.
I was putting in a M38 A1 grill and the darn tray is in the way.
Two routes I could take here I think.

1- cut the front of the tray off cut out around 1"-1.5" and weld the piece back in.

2- Or cut the tray all the way out and mount one on the fire wall.

Leaning toward the 1st option since I think it would be easy to do.
    What do y'all think?
    What would you do?
Guess there is a 3rd choice, put the stock 5 grill back in. Dont want to do that though.

Yes, the earlier models will have the tray up front on the passenger side right by the rad. That's what's been stopping me from putting in an M38A1 grill as well. I think I'd probably move it to the firewall.

    Thanks guys.
The more I think on t, looks like it may be faster/easier to find a later model tray and bolt it up.
After looking at the one in the YJ, one like it should work fine. Can even get some bling.
What year did they swap the tray placement?

I have a 67 with the 4 and it is up front. I do have one off the firewall that I took from a 75 I stripped. Thought it might come in handy one day. It is yours or anyone else that might need it for the cost of shipping. Will send a picture if needed

I would guess so, where is your heater, it should be on the firewall on the drivers side.

Nope. Got an old GM heater under the dash below the glove box.

    Thanks though.

As others have mentioned the F4s came with the frame mounted tray, V6s with the passenger side firewall one.

Q.- What the hecks the difference between the CJ5 & M38A1 grills??

I always thought they were the same piece except for the very early A1s that had the hinges.

The lights sit inside the grill farther. The marker, turn light bolts to a plate, making it sit a all the way inside the grill. Thats hitting the batt tray. Could make it fit by bending trimming the A1 piece but dont want to ruin it.
If I mount one on the f/w, I can use whats left of the batt tray after trimming for on board air maybe. ;)
