1955 CJ-5 Restore

hello everyone I have been going at this project for about 9 months now and I am severely behind schedule and way above my budget, like all jeep builds, I was 17 when i started this build hopefully finish it before I am 19. This is my first restore so be nice. Here is a list of things i have done so far that i can remember.
new wheel bearings
minor rebuilds on Transfercase and transmission
Almost everything knew on the Brakes
Fixed rust holes in the floor.
i will tray to add new photos everyday light room and windows 7 having problems working together.

I don't have Much photos from when I got it, by they way i paid 850$ for it

Looks like a good Jeep to start with. The problem is you have a budget just throw out that idea and fix things as you can. Good luck

Never thought of that save that one for the next project, hopefully a 47 Chevy Thrift Master.

Once i got the body off i painted the frame and axle with POR-15 it actually looks kinda good.

This was took me probably a month and a half to get this far thought i was making good time.

 

looks like an m38a1 except for maybe the grill...

 

And the frame. No gun mount.

Tub-----m38a1.

 

ya I think the tub is M38A1 and a civi frame. I heard that the early production numbers got M38A1 surplus tubs. some even got military frames.

 

Early frame though, factory shackle reversal like my '56.

 

Yep, I have the same frame on my '55 CJ5. It has the M38A1 shackle reversal but no gun mount. Yours is in a little better condition than mine was.

 

Has the civvy battery tray. Grill and dash not A1 and neither is that tailgate. Early 5's had battery box, but not sure if they had the NATO slave mount. My A1 did not have the cowl tag from Willys, but it was mounted to the wheelwell. Do you have a serial number riveted to the wheel well behind one of the seats? Interesting mix of parts. Can't wait to see it finished!

 

Old Jeeps, like old VWs have the amazing ability to get cobbled together from a vast array of parts----and they usually fit just fine

 

None behind the seats, the serial plate was on the firewall, you can see it on the driver side picture when the fenders are still on.

the serial number is 57548-13692

I figured that out pretty fast, PO decided if it doesn't fit it just need more washers.

Here is the body i think it was a school project for High school students one where they did a lot of bondo work because the whole body was covered in bondo even the straight metal.

there was a spot in the front of the tub where the bondo had to be an inch thick.

 

Snow on Memorial Day Weekend, that is just wrong. I'm glad I live in Dixie.

gave up on sanding the whole body myself and paid someone to sand blast it.

painted the under-body with por-15 then top coated it with Herculiner.

Lined the interior with herculiner not to sure if i like it more then if i would of just painted with regular paint.

got the engine painted, did the trannsmision to but don't have pictures right now.
