Hey all. The trim rings on all of my original gauges (Speedo, oil, amps) in my 74 CJ5 are black was this factory? I always thought the trim was chrome not black can anyone confirm this?

No, that's not correct. They were black in '72, but changed to chrome from '73 on.

Thanks was almost positive they were chrome but 74 can be a funky year as a few things changed half way through.

well, book doesn't say it....but the number is different for 73.

Stock on my 74 is chrome. Build date is somewhere around May-June 74 (sticker is missing, but I have compared serial number to other known build dates and arrived at a ballpark estimate). Yes it's true that many things changed during 74, they started the model year with black windshields and changed to body color sometime around January, 74.

Yup also Jeep changed the Jeep letters on the cowl to the more familiar late 70s and 80s Jeep lettering.

I also noticed the ignition keys changed from the smaller round head briggs and stratton keys to the square headed AMC keys.
