Gear Noise?

Park your jeep on a hill, put it in low-range 1st gear and step on the clutch... how much noise is too much? I was picking up a favorite road complex which meant I had to stop the jeep every 100 feet or so to get out and clean. I didn't let it get above a fast walking pace. I swear I could almost 'feel' the teeth as they turn. I have inspected/replaced all the fluids and nothing has any sparkles nor are my magnets any fuzzier than what I would consider normal. Far as I know it has always been like this but that was the first time that I could remember in the described situation. Is my grumble, loud as it might be par for the course and if it is why is the T-case so loud?

Which transmission? The T-90 has a straight-cut first gear, and it will whine. That's normal. 1st and reverse should be about the same, whine-amplitude-wise.

CLutch in, not moving, it shouldn't make a lot of noise. In neutral, all the gears except the input gear will come to a stop, and with the clutch in the input gear stops too. If you have noise with the clutch in, it's probably the throwout bearing.

sounds like a throw out bearing from how you describe it, the throw out bearing probably got a good work out that day and it heated up. like tim mentioned is it making the noise with the clutch pushed in?? if so that is the only thing turning......

Can the throw out bearing much that much noise with the motor off? The way I was letting it roll with the engine off, clutch down with the transmission in gear was spinning all of the drivetrain. I was stepping on the clutch to let gravity take me down w/o having to start it every time.

    Ah.

Could be a lot of things. I would check the u-joints first, both in the driveshafts and in the front axle. I presume you had it in 4WD?

My guess is the transfercase intermediate gear. Normally noisy but really make a whine when the needles get some wear. If you put a loud muffler on it, it will go away:D

I would let it roll again, as before, only this time with transfer case in neutral and hubs locked in. If you still get the grumbling noise then you know it won't be the x-fer or trans. It will be U-joints-diffs or front axle joints. If your noise is not there, then do it again with the x-fer in gear and the transmission in neutral. If no noise, then put the x-fer in neutral and the transmission in gear and crank it up. If the noise is there with the clutch out and trans in gear then the trans is giving you the noise.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

you're going faster than what low and low range are capable of...with engine running that is.
It's the gear whine of all the gears turning.
If the engine were running, you could possibly hand grenade the clutch disc from extreme centrifugal force.
bad habit to get into, in my opinion.
wanna test the theory, turn around, put it into reverse, and do it again.
it's wheel speed vs gear speed.

A friend of mine blew up the clutch disk in his J10 this way. Had the truck in first gear, low range, and pushed the clutch in to roll down an incline. That's about 6000 RPM of the clutch disk for every 10 mph of forward speed.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Don't push on the clutch and coast in gear if you've got low gearing or you're headed for disaster (blown up clutch from over revving).

This is great. I am experiencing some of the same symptoms but I have narrowed it down to my rear drive shaft is worn out at the dust seal and the angle is 20* even with 4* shims. This is amplifying my problems though. Now I know how to troubleshoot some more. This site is cool.

Oooh, had not thought about over driving the clutch...
