Replacing the Model 18 Intermediate Shaft

Does anyone here run the Advance Adapter tapered bearing?

 

do all of the 1 1/4" TCases have the loose needle bearings?

 

i dropped the case last spring for an intermediate shaft / clutch / transfer-case rebuild. if i were to replace only the intermediate shaft i would go in-place on a nice sunny day, here are some pics i took, i do not know the in-place process but hopefully someone can go in-depth on the process because it would be nice to know...



remember that removing the t-case requires opening the trans and tying the main shaft to the front of the trans and there is the input gear to remove inside the t-case along with the 5th trans to t-case bolt on the passenger side of your trans spacer.

 

i just spoke to herm.
when i described what the symptoms are
he told me it is probably endplay in the back of the transfer case.

 

i am not going to save a dime.
a mechanic with the proper tools and knowledge is going to do it.
maybe next year......

 

Sure you will! It's cheaper in the long run to do it once vs. doing it twice...

Hey I encourage you to do it yourself. I have ZERO mechanic knowledge prior to getting my Jeep. I have rebuilt the transfer case, transmission, and engine, and all work great. Just follow the instructions that Howard Eisenhauer posted. It's not hard, but you should take your time, and be sure to do a thourough cleaning of all parts before reassembly.
You will surprise yourself and you will have the confidence to rebuild it next time too (if ever).
If you do, be sure to secure the output on the transmission before you pull the transfer case or you'll have to rebuild the transmission too.

Regarding the Advanced Adapters intermediate gear kit with tapered roller bearings, I have a friend running it in his Dana 18 and has had no problems with it.

He doesn't put a lot of miles on his Jeep, but he wheels it hard when he does. He likes the Dusy/Ershom Trail in California.

 

Before you pull the transfer case be sure you read up on how to secure the insides of the transmission so that your tranny doesn't fall apart when you plll the T-case.
Lots of guys...just like me.. learned how to rebuild a transmission after improperly pulling the transfer case.
If you don't spend the 5 minutes it takes to secure the transmission gears properly before pulling the T-case, a bunch of little needle bearings fall out of the trans.

As everyone posted, you can do this yourself. The guides on the web like Rick Stivers will help a lot along with the FSM. You can also seal up all the bolts when you re-assemble it and you will have less leaking.

while i was at it i got some anti rattle springs as well as the pivot pin and gaskets and stuff i forgot the names of already.

I found a quick way to really quiet my 18 down today. Took the top off, works wonders......lol

 

Or just turn up the radioR)
