Light/Wiper/Hazards Dash Badge/Indicator

My 73 has the lighted indicators above the lights, wipers, and hazard switches in the dash. The wiper one has a blown bulb. Am I correct in thinking it is just a bulb blown that can be replaced, or will I have to replace the entire indicator? And, if so, where do I find them. I have only seen the indicators in a set of 6 for 76 and newer. Thank you.

 

I just replaced the indicators on my 73 with ones from 4WD hardware. One or two might look a little different but they are just fine.
They do have a bulb in them but I don't think you could find a replacement. It has two wires on it that are connected internally to clips.

 

I wonder if you could install some LEDs into the original white plastic block.

 

So are the 76 and 73 holes for the indicator lamps the same size? Also do you just pry them out the front of the dash?

Squeeze them very gently from behind (rrrow!) and push gently through the front of the dash. They are very likely brittle and the odds of you getting them out unbroken are slim and none, but you might try. I don't know of a source for the "Hazard" light but the headlight and wiper are basically the same as the 76+ replacements.

 

Yeah has anyone opened one of those up? Is it just a matter up undoing some clips to open the housing once they are off the dash or do they have to be carefully cut apart and reassembled?

 

The originals are usually so fragile they crumble long before you get to the stage of being able to dismantle them. The plastic is wafer thin and seems to degrade over time. The "lens" is held on by a metal trim ring that clamps onto the white plastic box. Inside is a small bulb that connects to the two metal prongs that come out the back. Wiring in an LED would be incredibly simple if you can take the unit apart and reassemble it without breaking it. You could also purchase the new replacements (they're only about 5 bucks) and attach your old "Hazard" lens to the body to create a new replacement, or disassemble them quite easily and install LED's.

 

If you have the original indicator lights, you can buy the aftermarket replacements and just swap out the plastic rear portion that contains the lamp. Carefully pry the thin metal tabs on the trim ring/bezel and they fit right over the new plastic lamp housing.

The problem with the aftermarket indicators is that they are intended for '76-later CJ's with blue tinted lenses and no hazard indicator. The 72-75 CJ's had green tinted lenses.

Instead of buying the complete set, just buy 3 of any one style. All you really want is the plastic lamp housing which are all the same size & shape.
