Dauntless v6 emblems

I have 3 used v6 emblems, and I want to refinish 2 to put on my jeep. Here's the deal. They are gold, white, and red background. 2 of them have black "v6", and one has a red "v" and a black "6". I tell you, it is factory in all three cases. What gives??

I have heard model paint and a brush will do it. I used to be a fanatical model builder in my youth, so no problem there. What brand/color paint was used?

Anybody go a different route? I have refinished other emblems (Chevy K5 Blazer/Cheyenne) emblems by covering them with masking tape and cutting it out with a x-acto knife, then spraying the color. I think this would work for the "v6" part but not the background.

Finally, has anybody ever considered making a sticker of these things? Maybe no one would be interested, but I for one would buy them and put them on magnets, then I could move them around, put em where ever I wanted, and remove them as needed. Not the same impact as a real emblem i guess, nonetheless I would be a customer.

Redid mine as well - Black, gold, red, and white Testors model paint along with some toothpicks and a very fine brush.

On my 71 the V6 was black from the factory so I painted them the same way

 

Schardein: Here is a couple of pics of my orig. NOS emblem. As I know it, this is a Commando emblem since it is "stick on". But, it is the same as my orig. ones on my '68 except it is "stick on" and doesn't have the 2 "prongs" on the back that are secured by "push on nuts". The colors are the same and the part # on the tag is 979617000.

 

Now that you mention it, the one with the red v came from a Commando at the junkyard.

My 69 5 had emblems with a red V and a black 6. My '71 5 had a black V and 6. The jeepster ('70) has gold/white/red background, red V, and WHITE 6. I don't think any of them have been repainted. I don't think the PO's of these jeeps even changed the oil (except the jeepster maybe)

Interesting, the ones on the jeepster are stick on. The ones on the '69 were too (I pulled them off and kept them). Can't say about the '71 though :?

 

Jim, where did you get 9 digits? All the Jeep PNs were 8xxxxx or 9xxxxx before the modern era (Sometime in the 60s or 70s Jeep started with 535xxxx and 545xxxx numbers, and some other prefixes that I'd probably recognize but don't remember). Looks like 979617 to me.

 

Hmmm the emblems on my 71 were stick on. It appeared that they may have had prongs but were removed at the factory?

 

Tim: You are correct. It is typed on the old IBM punchcard. They just filled up the box with 0000.

All 3 of my emblems have what looks like the place where the "prongs" were broke off. I can't for the life of me remember if when I removed the one from the commando at the junkyard if it was prongs or stickon. I wanna say stick on and I pried it off with a screwdriver. It was a complete 67 halfcab, made me sick to my stomach to see, by the way.

As some may know, when I got my 67 -5 it had a F4 in it. Finding the holes for the v6 emblem was one of the giveaways for me, along with a v6 radiator (complete with 2 rad hoses clamped together running up over the motor from the lower rad outlet to the water pump inlet on the OTHER side!), the VIN, 4.88 gears, and other generally cornfusing miscellaneous holes here and there.

 

mine have the posts w/nuts. A po broke one post off of each badge, and used trim tape to hold'em in place.

 

Where does one acquire one of these emblems? My drivers side is original, but the passenger side is missing. Obviuosly, it would be nice to have one for the passenger side.

JK, ebay and/or Willystech are popular places to search. I have an extra set of non-post badges that I've repainted. If you're in a pinch, I'd consider splitting the pair. (Send me a pm if interested! )
