Tires rub on springs.

My question is mainly for Blevisay, but I desperately need insight from anyone who has the answers. Blevisay advised that he had 2.5 inch springs and minimal lift from shackles and he is running 34X9.50's on Animal with stock rims. I put 2.5 inch springs and shackles that provide .75" of lift, i.e. 1.5" longer shackles on my '63 CJ5 with stock rims. They look great under it and there did not appear to be any problems until I tried to drive it around in the pasture. When ever I try to turn very far the inside lugs rub on the front of the springs. I performed the tie rod flip with the Rock kit and it helped the steering angles but not the rub. Will 2 degree shims for the front axle cure this or do I have to get offset rims or wheel spacers. I would love to know what Blevisay did to cure the ailments of the combination because I love the way animal looks. I guess I am trying to replicate it in an uglier fashion. PLEASE HELP.:?:?

I have the same problem with wider tires on narrow rims. The tires bulge out and interfere with the springs more than narrower tires would. You have a couple of options.

One is to adjust the axle stops so that the tires do not come in contact with the springs. There should be cap screws on the axle on each side that will limit the minimum turning radius.

Second is to buy wider wheels with either the same or less back spacing as your existing wheels. This will move the tires relatively outward, reduce the bulge and make the tires interfere less.

I have 1 1/4" spacers on my 81 CJ5. Spidertrax makes nice ones, $100 for 2. They bolt to your hub and you bolt your wheel to the studs on the spacer.

My tires rub on the springs also - I've got 33 x 12.50's. My thinking is that the very best way to solve this is with a change in backspacing. However, I have not been able to calculate or measure what the ideal backspacing would be. I'm thinking between 2.5 and 3 inches????

The next problem is finding some black spoke wheels with that backspacing. From what I'm finding they are not made . . . .

With a change in the back spacing and wheel spacers you need to be aware of tire scrub radius - it can cause issues and wonder on the roads.

Wil 1" spacers fix my spring rub issue? What have the guy's with the same set used to alleviate their issues.

    I've been running 1.5" spacers for ~8 or 9 years , about 40K or 45K miles, with no scrubbing/ wandering/ wear issues.

just adjust the steering stops its easy and free. Its pretty much a given when going with bigger tires and you shouldnt notice hardly any difference with that size tire. You can always add spacers or whatever later if your not happy with it

Spacers are illegal in my state. I am interested in the comment about tire scrub. Can you elaborate? What is it and what are it's symptoms?
