Exhaust Systems

  1. I'm looking into getting a new exhaust system for my 74 CJ5 and I'm running into a bunch of different options..... so now I'm confused. I have a inline 6 cyl with single exhaust. My kids love wheeling and love the noise of glass packs. So I'm being told that I can go dual exhaust with one pack or two with the same amount of noise? I'm looking at either the "Cherry Bombs" or the "Magnaflow". Also I'm being told I will gain no more noise if I just stayed with a single exhaust system. Again my kids like the noise and I would prefer the deeper sound with the Cherry Bombs. Any ideas?

    Years ago at a Jeep Jambo, a friend and myself came across a guy with a HEALTHY sounding CJ-7. We asked him what he had under the hood. He responded "freshly rebuilt 401". Had he not popped the hood to show us the 258 I would have never doubted his 401 claims! 2 1/2" single to a Flowmaster. Keep in mind also the Flowmaster has no "packing" to get saturated should you stall in deep water/mud. IMO I don't think a fairly stock I-6 AMC motor will benifit from a dual exhaust. I my exp. lower hp motors like a little back-pressure. I have had duals/headers and Thrush mufflers on my 360/74-CJ-5, and never liked the way it ran. Currently I have stock manifolds and 2 1/2" piped to a single Flowmaster...never ran better
     
  3. I just checked out the sales of Flowmasters..... a bit pricy. Are they as loud as the Cherry Bombs or the Magnaflows?

    I can't speak on the Cherry Bombs..$$$ or sound...Like I said, a 258 sounded like a built V8!

    PS: The flowmaster on my jeep is over 10 years old, and no signs of failing!
     
  5. I just listened to some "YouTube" videos of the three mufflers.... Cherry bombs, MagnaFlow and the Flowmasters..... I think I liked the 40 series.

    This is a good question. I have a 76 CJ-5 w/304 V8 that needs a total exhaust overhaul. There is nothing but 2 Cats and turn out on it now. Can't really drive it on the street that way. I was just about to start searching for stock exhaust info. I was thinking singles with just a little growl. Nothing much. Would I be best to just have the muffler shop build it for me or do the aftermarkets still make stock pipes?:?

    When I bought my '75 CJ5 (304 V8), it had in-frame headers, and dual glass packs that exited via turn-downs right under the body. It was plenty lound, but sounded cheap. I've sinced had a muffler shop re-do everything rear of the headers. 2-1/2" dual exhaust through Flowmasters, 45deg side exit behind teh rear tires. Not as loud, but much sweeter sound and noticeably improved power. The trick is getting the passenger side exhaust past the transfer case wile remaining within the frame rails, but a good exhaust fabricator can make it happen.

    Stick with the single exhaust and go FlowMaster you won't regret it. Good sound but not headache loud.

    I've had a flowmaster on my truck for almost 10 years now. I've had to replace the exhaust pipes around it after they rotted out, but the flowmaster still looks and sounds great. No signs of rust. I'm a believer, and I got the 3 chamber so it just sounds good, not too loud.

    What size tubing are you guys running on your 258's, i'm due for new exhaust aswell?

    Mines long gone but if I recall right it was 2 1/4".

    Wow. 40 series flowmasters are earkickers! We put dual 40 series flowmasters on a sunbeam tiger with a 302 ford. SOULSPLITTING loudness!

    OP: I don't think a 258 would make a nice sound with a 40 series, but YMMV. Stick with a single exhaust to maintain some backpressure on the engine.

    If you have CATS and want a little bark Flowmaster makes a 2 chamber muffler instead of the normal 3 chamber.

    Dunno if this can stay here or not, I think it's close enough. Moderators move if you need to* Speaking of new exhausts for the 6 cylinders, I have the 225 v-6 in my '67 and need new pipes and mufflers. I have headers on it right now that come down outside the framerails and the collector is about where the frame rails are, so the headers are looong. My Jeep doesn't seem to have great power, but runs excellent. Is there the possibility that I am oversized on exhaust and need to downsize? I think my pipes are 2" on both sides, and some magnaflows on it. I have a set of factory exhaust manifolds. Should I re-machine them, then run a single 2-1/4" pipe or something on there with a single series 40 flowmaster? Think a bit more backpressure would be good for the :v6: and get my power up just a bit?

    I have a 258 with dual outlet header and dual exhaust with glasspacks. I have had many peoples jaws drop when I pop the hood and they see the I6. It sounds like a V8, a small V8, but it does have a good sound. It is now just a little loud for me, but I still like it. If I ever do go to a 4.0 head I will go back to a single exhaust for simplicity, but I have had the duals for almost 15 years now.

    Not really an exhaust issue per say but is there anyone with a 304 that has more than about a 1/2 inch gap between the stock steering linkage and the headers?

    the F.M.40's are on the olds and I have a v6 in the jeep ss shorty magnaflows run all the wayout on the jeep which I like at idle and crawl but to much at speed. I'll see if I can get my wife to video. never sounds right on youtube.
