header gasket leak

    Does a header gasket leak cause popping and backfiring when decelerating? My CJ has a header gasket leak and I am sure that is the results.

    evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

    If the leak is large enough, yes.

    Take your headers off and run down to your local machine shop and have them milled. Then just bolt them up dry with no gaskets right to the block, you'll be good to go.

    Yes. I just cracked my headers out on the dunes a couple weekends ago. Big leak right at the flange, lots of popping when in gear on decel, and sometimes a big backfire inbetween gears if I let off the gas fast. Welded up the crack, all the popping/backfire went away.
