T18 trans into my 62 CJ?

Does anyone know if a T18 4-speed can be installed into my 62 CJ? If so, what does it take?

I've found someone local to me selling a T18 from a Jeep, but don't know what it would take to fit into my stock 62.

The granny gear would come in so handy for me. Any help appreciated!

I'm sure it can be adapted, but I don't know exactly with what. Note that if the T-18's from a Jeep, it might be the 4:1 first instead of the 6.32:1. Check on that before you get too excited about the granny gear (not that 4:1 is too shabby).

Novak was working on something to adapt the T-18 to the F134.

The T-18 from a Jeep has the same pattern as the Dana 18 transfer case from your Jeep. The output gear from your T-90 should work. You may have to change the transmission case to a later Dana 20 case, and possibly change some gears in the transfer case to match the larger diameter intermediate shaft of the Dana 20 case.

Adapting to the engine will be more difficult. You'll have to machine an adapter, and figure out which clutch components to use. Not trivial.

Herm the overdrive guy is working on an adapter for this as well. if it's from a 78 or 79 cj then it will have the granny gear. Jeep had around 15 diff. variations on the t-18 though so gotta really do your home work. Novak has some great info.

Buy it "IF" it has the adapter for the t-case. Dana 20 has a 4" bore, it can be machined to work with the dana 18. The ford input shaft can be used if you find one the the same ft. bearing width. This is what I have done. Going in mine. Chevy 350, t18- jeep case and main shaft, ford gears, Dana 18 with O.D.
    NO adapter needed from Novak.

Yea, adapting it to my F-head appears to be the issue. Bummer!

Wish there was a way to get a nice granny gear on this thing.

The T-18 will have been mated to a Dana 20, which has a larger input hole than some Dana 18s. However, I'm not sure if the T-18 requires a big-hole case or not. If the Dana 18 is a small hole case, and the T-18 has an alignment ring that needs the large hole case, then one would have to change to a large hole case (or bore out the existing case). The spline count will match the T-90 output gear, and the bolt pattern will match, but I don't know if the hole diameter of the D18 will be ok.

FWIW, the factory :v6: T18 works with the D18...

    Oh. Typo - sorry.

    I'd guess the '71 CJ-5 with a T-18 has a big hole Dana 18? Not sure about a '62 though.

Yep. When I bought the '71 it actually had a D20 in it, but it all bolted right to my '67 D18...
