i have a 1970 cj5 with the 225 v6, i'm looking for an intake and carb setup for rock crawling. is there a fuel injection system i could use? my jeep is almost set up for crawling. dana 44 in the rear, dana 30 in the front with a disc brake conversion. 4:88's with lockers. sm420 tranny, hydrolic clutch, yg spring conversion with four inches of lift, 33, 14 inch boggers. i'm almost there but i don't like flooding out on real bouncy terrain or super steep inclines. any info on mods i can do to the engine would be great. i love the low end of this engine but have a little trouble flooding out.
    thanks.

try adjusting the float bowl down about 1/8", and retune. makes a big difference.

Welcome from the MotorCity --What part of MT?? Just a few minutes ago, my wife and I were evaluating a trip to MT next summer. We both have spent alot of time there many years ago and want to make a trip back.

  4. montanajeep: Welcome from Havasu. I too run the 2G, and have noticed, not really flooding, a "roughness" on extreme washboard roads. Nothing that will kill the engine, and nothing that de-clutching and reving the engine won't clear. been thinking about lowering the float also.

you need to take the top cover off the carb. (held down by 6 screws) The float will be under the cover. it will be ether brass or plastic. Next bend the arm that attaches the float to the cover up about an 1/8". you might need to retune the carb by adjusting the 2 screws in front of the carb. for this you need a vacuum gauge, and a small screwdriver.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

you might try an in-line pressure regulator
normal mechanical fuel pump press about 5-6 lbs, I believe
with regulator, you could turn down to say 1- 1-1/2 lbs
this would only be for crawling; no wide open hill climbs as you would run out of fuel

  8. In "lowering your float level" is usually what you want to accomplish is to "lower the fuel level" in the float bowl. Actually, you want to close the neddle seat sooner. Now you don't want it to shut off "too" soon, or you'll run out of fuel. So get a rebuild kit for the 2G (I presume thats what you have) and read the instructions carefully on how to adjust the float. The 2G's are really a simple carb and very easy to work on. Extreme washboard roads, like I have here, will in time cause the float to get out of adjustment.

montanajeep: as jpflat2a stated, Put a fuel pressure regulator on.....problem solved! He and I both have them. With it installed, when the float bounces it can't squirt as much fuel in to flood engine. I run mine at 1 1/2 lbs....sometimes forget to switch it back for the highway, and even at 1 1/2 lbs still no problem unless I'm pulling a hard grade or trailer. Good Luck!! Glenn

Question....Fuel pressure regulator is installed in-line between fuel pump and carb, right? It adjusts/tunes via a screwdriver? Any brand suggestions?

Napa has a Puralator brand that adjusts with a knob. Roughly $20, IIRC.

  12. Good advice on the fuel regulator.

Jim: I think the stock 225 pump (3 port with return line) has a pressure of only 2-3 lbs with the return line blocked. With it open, it's only 1.5-2 lbs.

I had a problem @ Tellico last time where we thought I was running out of gas. Seems like we even scanned the group for a tank of gas.

Turns out I had plenty of gas but for some reason my jeep just started to kill on me now and again and I had to keep revving it up to keep it going.

The problem went away on the highway.

Think maybe this same problem was happening to me? If so should I also buy a fuel pressure regulator? If so what PSI would I run it at on highway and what PSI on the trails?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Jim: mininum pressure at idle should be 3 3/4 lbs with line blocked
    FYI

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Jerry, it would install as you stated; they usually have a knob you turn for adjustment
as Mike stated, cost about $20

  16. Jim: Well, 2-3 is "close"! R) Hadn't look at the FSM in a while!
