Fender Installation

I will soon be reattaching the fenders to my '64 CJ5. It looks like there was some material between the fenders and the tub to keep them from rubbing, metal to metal. Any idea what that is, and where it can be had? I asked one of the local FLAPS, and they had no idea.

    Thanks,

    Eric

It's usually called 'rope caulk' and can be found at the big box hardware stores, RV supply, and likely lots of other places.

    Jim,

I'll try to post a few photos this evening. I don't know if you remember, but the story left off with this:

BTDT, the old "runs like a champ 'til it heats up" block crack!

Yep, fortunately/unfortunately, the crack was created by the PO, unknown to me. When I got the jeep, the brakes were inoperable, so I did the brakes/transmission/transfer case before I really got to drive it and discover this condition.

Luckily a month before this incident, I had picked up a spare engine (not knowing how soon I would need it)
(the spots on my son's head are dinosaur tatoos)

As you can see from the picture, it was left outside for many years. Unfortunately the carb was not on it, and it was not covered very well. The #2 cylinder intake valve was open, and bore the brunt of each southern california rain for the past 10-20 years. When we opened it up, the #2 cylinder was trashed. I took it to the machine shop, and they did their magic by resleeving the #2 cylinder, and boring the block 0.020 over, with new pistons, rings, bearings, etc.

Who says an F-head can't do 75 mph? Mine did:

It didn't complain one bit. In fact I think it may enjoy riding in the jeep more as a passenger than up under the hood.

I got it back to the house, and started putting it back together:

It's almost all back together, then back into the jeep it goes:

When I bought the jeep, I figured I would rebuild the T-90 and the Dana 18, which I did. I figured eventually I'd rebuild the engine, but I wasn't counting on it being so soon!

Anyway, it should be back together soon, and I'll get to take it up to the mountains where it belongs.

Great job. Good pics. Keep them coming. Hope all goes well. Hidden problems always are not good. But they always seem to rear their ugly head when least expected. But this is half the fun. R)

Not sure on you guys with "late model" 60's jeeps, but their was canvas strips between tub and fenders on military jeeps. Fender welting is available from just about any jeep supplier.
