Ok, so I got the cap off.

I got that portion of the seal out, no big surprise there, huh?

Now I'm stuck with the upper 1/2 in the block. I put the corkscrew that came with the sneaky pete in and pulled like it said. Well, about an inch of it came out. It just shredded. It's now far enough up on the left side I can't see any of it. The right side isn't much better off. It just keeps shredding. Of course now I'm at a point where I can't even get any of it out.

So you guys have never failed me before. How do I get the darned thing out?

Dropping the tranny isn't really an option, gravel drive, no garage, etc. thus has been ruled out by SWMBO.

However IF that's what it takes I have two options.

One, I just got two bar brackets put on it I could pull it to the auto shop and hang my head in shame while I coax them to fix the problem and finish the job for me.

Two, I buy cheap beer and convince my neighbors by giving it to them to let me use their concrete pad or shop with a concrete floor.

    What say ye?

I have driven them out before with a piece of 1/4" dowel. If you can't pull it, try pushing it.

Did you loosen the other crank caps?

    Re: Rear main seal removal

Yeah, ok, I've been trying that to some degree. Not having a 1/4" dowel has hampered that effort. :D I'll try to get one tomorrow and see what I can do.

Didn't loosen the other crank caps, you think that would help apparently?

AMC manual tells you to. I have not, but it makes sense.

OK, the Buick V6 stuff I found on GN T-type.org made no mention of it. Not that much more work at this point and worth a shot!

sparky, when i did my rear main i slowly rotated the motor by hand and the upper half, just rolled around and came out with a little push with a small screwdriver. it moved enough i was able to grab it with a pair of pliers a pull it out. if you pull your plugs you should be able to rotate your motor easily. hth

I've had to loosen/ remove all main caps on SBC's to get the seal (pieces) out...

Loosening the other main caps is a big help ( less pressure on the seal) once I did that I was able to pull it out with a pair of pliers, I didnt have to rotate it but I can see where that could help, By loosening the other main caps it make the new seal half go in real easy. HTH

Makes perfect sense, I just had tunnel vision after reading other "how-tos" y'know. :)

Thanks guys, I'll try that, at least I'm under the Jeep where the rain isn't as heavy.

  11. Re: Rear main seal removal

So I guess I will be spending more time with you under the jeep helping the engine turn huh? :) lets try taking off the fan blade so it is a bit easier and I don't get so cut up. ;)

    Re: Rear main seal removal

Go ahead and pull the caps all the way off so you can check the bearings while you are already in there.
