New style tire rack. Only weighs 20 lbs

If I didn't want critisism I never would've posted my design. It helps me work out the kinks.

Boyink, I'm one step ahead of you, sir. I have a ratchet strap tied to it for safety untill I know it will hold.

 

How about lowering the tire a little bit.. to improve rear view ? I don't think it'll effect your angle of approach too much.

 

When I said drag point I meant as a drag anchor type thing to help slow down the descent into where ever. Not sure if that is a good idea, however. I try to avoid steep places like that so I don't have to do that kinda stuff. You know - where ever my personal internal tilt meter says "Uh-uh, don't got there!"

I like the idea! I am with others when saying that it would be a little awkward to remount your tire in inclement situations like, rain, snow, night, mud. Otherwise, it is a killer idea. I am looking forward to your progress reports.

Could make the the upper tire mount so it rotates for alignment with lug nut holes while mounting flat tire. Spring loaded dowel pin or something simple like that.

about the latch working loose you could put a lynch pin or some other removable pin on either side for some insurance.

with a little more refinement i think youll really have something.

 

Maybe you could drive a solid metal rod into the top lip of your tailgate, maybe two feet long in the center, to reinforce it, then weld a loop in the center of top lip of tailgate,(keep it just low enough that top can still snap on) pointing straight out toward hub mount center, then run a j bolt threw the center of the hub, with the j snagging into the loop, then use the little bolt holes where the looking hub mounts and mount a Quick-Release Toggle Clamp,you can get them at Rockler or Eagle America woodworking stores, and their adjustable. P.S. and a rubber stopper in between somewere.

Interesting concept... did you make it swing down just to make it easier to get the tire off, or to load stuff in the back of your jeep?

To load stuff in or out of the back of the jeep, you'd have to work around the tire on the ground.

 

I really like it. I was searching for that very thing. I really didn't want to use the stock mount on my 65'. Was thinking of modifing a swing away rear bummper to fit my old rig. Good ol' American ingnuity! atriot:

 

I've been thinking about doing a spare carrier. That looks good. As others have said, just need a way to stabilize the tire up higher also. Good Work!
