What was the cutoff for different bendix gears and ring gears on the flywheel? I want to eventually want to goto a solinoid starter, just want to know if i have to switch ring gears or not. On the CJ2a page it seems like it is only 2a's that need to have the ring gear changed. I jsut want to make sure.

The way I understand it, only the 3a and m38 need to change the ring gear. The 2a's were bendix type starters with a foot electric switch. The 3a and m38 had manual foot starters. But you can just go with a late model gear reduction starter and not change the ring gear. Check these guys out..

Cool. High $ but probably worth it. Might be easier to jsut do that than pull motor and swap ring gear.

Over on the ECJ5 part of this site they're talking about a early toyota landcruiser starter bolting right up on a F head. It was a 9 tooth and about $30 at the local parts store. Don't know if that might work or not.

My past experience with old Toyota parts were kinda funny for my old '74 p.u. about 10 yrs. back. Master cylinder $ 15, core $44. Alternator $ 60, core $65. some parts they really want the core back.

Dan, I went through this when I "rebuilt" my starter. If you have the mechanical starter, everything has to be swapped. Ring gear and bellhousing is needed from the correct Jeep. For some reason they gave us an oddball bellhousing that the other starters wont bolt up to even if you did change the ring gear. Your talking about spending close to $150 in all those parts.

'2A parts are sheep, except for the starter. What's the issue with the foot starter Danny?
