The full-floater Dana 23 would be 4.88 gears. The original Dana 44 with two piece axles in the M38 would have had 5.38.

His jeep has the axe/shovel indentions on the passenger side, which is correct for an M38 and it has the tailgate as well. Only the MB in the flatties had no tailgate, and the M38A1 along with the early '70's Renegades.

Looks like a modified 3A body. Has a 3A/M38 windshield, but tailgate is welded up. Has what appears to be the small civilian fuel tank and does not have indents for shovel/axe. Does not have cut-out for snorkel on hood, either.

Which look? The one in the ECJ ad? nothing, run it like it is. I am very jealous, that tub appears to be in awsome condition. My 3A is swiss cheese :(. I need to get it home and get to work on it.

something to do would be to get the correct gas tank in with the fill on the side of the body. Also make sure you have a m38 frame. Do you have the data plate behind teh passenger seat on the wheel well? That will give you the serial number.

I was thinking about fixing the gas tank setup.... I do not have a serial number, and i know he said the frame is two different ones bolted together...and most of the mechanics are from an anphib jeep. the pic i posted i guess changes. It was the pic with a front shot of a flatfender and two more jeeps following it and it was in black and white

If the motor is from a GPA that is worth some $$$. I just picked up a parts jeep the has the correct tank and the part of the body where the filler goes is also solid and could be cut out. Take some more detailed pics of your jeep, the frame and under side of it. Also look in front of the crossmember under the grill, the frame if it is m38 at all should be boxed to the frame horns.

:? The transfer and tranny each have their own drain plug and fill plug...

    Nice looking M38!

found the plugs, ends up my tranny plug is on the passenger side also, so I dont have a t90? Ill take more shots tomorrow of the motor and tranny and frame. I dont have the money to pull the body and do a complete restoration, so I think for now I may give the paint a quick sand and roll a new coat of red. wont look that great up close but it will do until I have the money to do everything correctly...

You may have a T-84 if the running gear came out of an amphib jeep

i would think if it's a t-84 the floor would be hacked. t-84 is a inch shorter than a t-90 and everything looks centered in the floor.

it also looks like the frt crossmember is a hat channel rather then round? frt half of the frame may be a GPW?

the head looks to be later than earlier by the ribs between the studs.

    it sure is purdy.

I thought M38s had the indentations on the Driver's side as well? I know it should have a fuel filler on the driver's side. Could have been removed along with the tank though.

Nope. Indentions on driver's side with MB and GPW, passenger side with M38. What does the tub look like inside? What about the seat frame? Is the fuel access hole cut or is it stamped with re-inforced edges?

Thanks a lot guys for the help with identifying what I have, I will be going though and posting more pics tomorrow of the tub, tanks, underbody and drivetrain. For now heres a quick question. If I have the full-floater Dana 23 with 4.88 gears, what ring and pinion would I need and where could I get it? Im almost certain thats where the leak is at.

What makes you think the R&P needs to be replaced? Before messing with it, you need to determine if the front is 4.88 or not. The Dana axles should have tags below the bolt heads identifying the number of teeth on the ring and pinion respectively. If not, you may have to pull the diff covers and you will find the same information stamped on the edge of the ring gear. Google should show you what to look for.
